sorry richard,
I forgot to mention i'd already liiked at sane, freshmeat, Suse,
linuxnewbee, RH, Turbo, etc sites. I was looking for "Firsthand" Experiences
as i'm only going to get one go at this one.
Anyway, thanks for your quick responses and I agree with you the 1542 /1540
are the most robust.
regards
scsijon

Hi folks, anyone got good or bad stories about Branded Scanners. I need

get one very soon and are looking for recomendations.
Over the past two years this one seems to have developed into some thing of a saga :-)
The best I've found so far were the Umax S1200 and S6-E/12-E. These are the SCSI scanners. Best SCSI card was Adaptec AHA1542. There are other scanners that work very well but I wouldn't like to say too much about them due to lack of experience with them.
Of course, USB scanners are now with us !! But, I've found several IT scientists cursing their hardware when they haven't quite worked.
Some useful links........

You might also have a look at Freshmeat ?
Thanks
