[opensuse] 42.2 - Why don't icons stay put???
One thing I've noticed is that desktop icons have a bad habit of moving around after rebooting etc. At least in 13.1, they tended to stay put (but not always), if one properly logged out. Why do they move around in 42.2? In other operating systems I've worked with (Windows & OS/2), they always retained their position. Once a desktop icon has been positioned, it shouldn't ever move, unless the users specifically moves it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I think this is usually a function of the desktop or window manager. I run 42.1/LXDE/openbox and if I right-click on a desktop icon I have a checkbox option to "stick to current position" which does exactly what it says. I don't see that. Even then, why should it be necessary to do that for each icon? There is an option to lock icons, but then you can't move 'em when you want, without first unlocking them. Icons staying put has been standard for years, why not now? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Are you using Folder View or Desktop view? If Folder View, I have seen the desktop icons move around on prior Tumbleweed snapshots and on 42.1. On 42.2 it doesn't appear to be happening anymore. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Folder view Folder View is for the most part working on my 42.2 box without the icons changing positions on a reboot or restart of Plasma, but it does happen from time to time. I don't recall it happening lately, though. One complaint I have is that the spacing between the icons is way too large, the grid, that is, and I want to set it so the icons reside close together. But that is currently impossible. You used to also be able to (in KDE 4.x) start typing the name of a folder or file on your desktop, and as soon as there was a match it would highlight it and all you had to do was press enter to open it.
Folder View is a work in progress, and I have asked about it before. KDE devs don't appear very interested in fixing Folder View right now as well as bringing it to feature-parity with KDE 4.x as they have other priorities. If and when it gets fixed is my best guess. It comes down to manpower and the fact that Folder View is not a default option. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I had/have the same problem with 42.1/KDE. After each reboot some of the icons are moved to another place. It's really very annoying, just like the missing possibility to put icons where I want them and not in the grid the developer found better than my own organization... The icons only (mostly!...) stay where I've put them if I use the desktops context menu to lock icons. It is kind of uncomfortable, as I have to unlock them in case I want to move one, and then don't forget to lock them again of I get the mess again after the next boot. Haven't found another resolution, though. -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Barcelona http://www.daniel-bauer.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

On kde4 and kde5 in pclos, if you right click on the desktop, you will get a list of options, which includes "Lock Icons" and "Lock Widgets" so if you have icons and not widgets, you can just apply the first. It is not 100% foolproof--I have seen it over-ridden at least once (in quite a few years) but it's pretty close. --doug
