Chris, Thanks for your reponse to my plea for help in getting Netscape to work on the internet. I'm still stuck. I do not have a firewall installed and ipchains is not present. I tried 'lynx' and got the response 'Making HTTP connection to www.compuserve.com', but then it just sat there. I guess you are right. I have must have a problem with configuration but I haven't a clue what that could be. I've tried everything that I can think of. If you have the time, I really woud be grateful for a few pointers. Can you ping 204.71.200.243 (yahoo.com) ? If so can you ping yahoo.com? If not then you have a dns problem. I believe I have the same, or similar problem that I've discussed here before. I can ping the sites that won't load and get answers very quickly and no packet loss from sites that return pings. I have heard of a number of other Linux users that are having the devil of a time accessing sites on the net. Jim

When you say you can ping them do you mean by name? Or by number? If it's number then your DNS hasn't been set in /etc/resolv.conf Nick -- Nick Zentena "The Linux issue," Wladawsky-Berger explained, "is whether this is a fundamentally disruptive technology, like the microprocessor and the Internet? I can ping by name. I believe my DNS is working properly. Jim

BTW there is some sort of security problem with Netscape prior to 4.73. If you need to use SSL get the latest version. Ken,
The problem may be that your ISP is proxying HTTP connections and
the proxy's configuration is messed up. My ISP did this for several
hours. It affected only the DSL connections, dialup was fine.
Try a known working system, even a Windows box. Also check that
Netscape is not proxying (edit>preferences>advanced>proxies), though
if lynx behaves the same, that shouldn't be the problem.

Jeffrey
