Hi, I recently installed 8.1.Pro (i.e. upgraded from 7.3, but as a new install) on a couple of computers and am facing some problems that I haven't been able to solve: (Toshiba Tecra-8100, built in Yamaha YMF-744 sound chip). Problem 2 of 2: Sound doesn't work. Worked perfectly (& autodetected) under 7.3. Now the chip is detected OK (Yast2) and everything seems to be fine, but the only sound that comes out of the speakers is a weak "chirp-chirp" every time a sound file starts and when it ends. I've tried both ALSA and OSS (3.97e). Now, the stranger: Once when I booted the sound worked (under ALSA). Tried different applications, MP3's and audio-CD's - all worked. I hadn't done any changes right before, neither did I do when it worked, but after the next reboot it was silent again - and haven't worked since. As I do not know how well the Tecra implements ACPI I've tried commands like "apm=on acpi=off" and "pci=acpi" in boot.local, but they seem to have no effect at all. I also have problems with another installation of 8.1 Pro, posted here under "Problems with 8.1 Pro: Mouse Wheel". As I said in the other mail: Looking at these two problems I wonder if there is a problem during initialization of the HW (I might be totally wrong here). I apprechiate any comments and ideas? rgds, /Henrik

In boot.local???? Where did you get that idea??? Those parms belong on the lilo/grub boot parameter line. You know, that blank line that appears as the counter blocks ascend.... Just press space bar and the counters stop. Jump down and put pci=acpi on that line and try that. If that does not work try the others, but dont shot-gun them all in at once. -- _________________________________________________ No I Don't Yahoo! SNIP... I have the same model of laptop and the same problem. I have found the following: * use acpi=off in the bootloader to allow apm to work * do a suspend and then a resume, the sound will now work * beware that I have had the machine lock up SOLID playing mp3 files (it doesn't do it any other time, so I'm inclined to blame the sound). No Ctrl-Alt-ANYTHING will get out of it, the reset button must be pushed. Maybe these observations will help diagnose the problem.
