Hi Steven;
My wife & I use WP 4.2 under DOS. While for me it's ok, no big deal, my wife loves it. I, at first, thought about upgrading to WP7/Linux but the price stopped me. Yes, I know that it's not much, but my entire computer bugget for the year is only 240 DM (ca. 150$). So it's out.
I think the Linux apps market is going to be somewhat confusing and contradictory for some time; at least until our society evolves forward into direct leasing of software or more freeware, or even banner-subsidized applications. Now that the hardware is a commodity, the os is a commodity, so it will follow that apps will become commodities, and a day will come when people will laugh if someone wants more than $25(US) for an application. Cross platform technologies such as Java, Tcl/Tk, and other cross platform "enablers" make the possibility of renting software directly from the author a complete possibility. Imagine in the near future, if you want to use software, you go to a licensing page, pop out a credit card and get 6 months use for example $6, maybe ...and the app is downloaded and run direct from the author. The advantage is that the user gets current software all the time, and the author is getting paid for their work.
The main thing I'm looking for now is a replacement for M$ Publisher. I need to be able to layout a bulletin and all I have is Publisher. If Star Office can handle layouts then I can delete all of M$ Windows. One question can Applix do layouts?
GIMP is a "knock off" of Adobe Photoshop, and is better in some of its features than Photoshop. It may have some of what you need. Another free tool you can use for limited layouts is Netscape's composer, While it's not everything you need, it will definitely be something you can use. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
