[SLE] JDK1.3,SuSE 6.4, segmentation faults - Am I the only one?
I just downloaded the latest JDK1.3 to my SuSE box and I can't get it to run. I get a segmentation fault as soon as I enter 'java' at the command prompt. I would like to know if others have this working. It would save me a lot of time if I could eliminate my configuration from the possible sources of the problem. Lenz, Thank's I'm one problem ahead of you. I found the answer on sun's site. That is it said to upgrade the kernel. Unfortunately now my sound is kaputt :-(. You will find my whine about that in my most recent posts. Hi Lenz, And regarding your post at: http://lists.suse.com/archives/suse-linux-e/2000-Jun/1341.html [so-called silent-stack-overflow checking patch from Andrea Arcangeli to the SuSE kernel] issue. You said: "To disable this behaviour, run the following command to disable this functionality: echo 0 > /proc/sys/vm/heap-stack-gap" How do you re-enable this functionality?? Using wich cmd?? (I have a related issue with the new Informix IIF2000 on SuSE, wich i might not argue here) Wich are the exact effects of the patch?? (maybe post a new thread on the issue to close missinfo??) Beg your pardon for not reading the source, you might argue that i'm a bit lazy. =:`) Thanks a lot for your time. The command is the same, just echo "1" instead of "0", that's all.

Here are the gory details: This patch has been created by Andrea Arcangeli. He received a testcase from the glibc guys that was causing silent mm corruption with the stack that was overwriting the heap. There were two issues: one was mremap growing up in the virtual addresses even if not necessary. But even given that problem, the glibc guys were expecting a friendly segfault if the stack was going to overwrite the heap.
Beg your pardon for not reading the source, you might argue that i'm a bit lazy. =:`)
