On the 6.3 installation CDs, there are 2 Linux sources: package linux and package linclude, which seem to make up one version, and package lx_suse, which makes up the other.
Unless I remember it wrongly, this is correct.
As a guess, I think that I should install the lx_suse package, create a symbolic link to that directory and call the link 'linux', and then I can create kernel images according to the instructions, right?
Right. (except that the symbolic link should be created by the install.)
Assuming that this is correct, under what circumstances would I want to compile the other set of code, which I am guessing is "standard" linux code?
You might not want to compile the other set as it is, but if you want to upgrade to the latest kernel using patches, you should install the other set and start from there. This would require a much smaller download than a complete set of new sources.
