problem setting up monitor in SUSE 10-RC1
Dear SUSE users: I thought I give a try to openSUSE 10-RC1. The installation run smoothly. I own a 17'' CRT monitor (model: Diamond CM-1766MCLR). SUSE usually does not recognize it and sets it as a VESA monitor with 1020x768 resolution at 60 Hz and 16 bit color depth. In earlier SUSE versions (in 9.0, 9.1, 9.2 and 9.3) I could use sax2 to override these values and set other values that are acceptable for the monitor to display in 1024x768 at 85 Hz, 24 bit color depth. For this I had to change to HorizSync and VerticalFresh values that I found on the net (actually I have set them 28-70 and 50-160). In SUSE 10.0-RC1 I also set up the same values but in this case the picture become really dark, barely visible and a maximum of 84 Hz refresh rate. In all the previous SUSE versions I had perfectly clear and light picture using these values. Since the monitor configuring panel has changed in 10.0 I might missed something during the setup. Any idea how to make my monitor work as in earlier SUSE versions? Thanks, IG ____________________________________________________________________________ Ingyenes hirdetés feladás az [origo] aprón! Hi Istvan, I had a problem setting up my monitor (custom settings) under RC1 and solved it by using my 9.3 xorg.conf file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf). regards, - Carl

Thanks for your quick answer. I have copied my 9.3's xorg.conf file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf in 10.0 and restarted the X server. It did not work, the screen is very dark again. Did they maybe change the vga driver? I have an s3 savage card and X uses the s3 driver. Any other idea? Hi Istvan, I can't think of a "magic bullet" at this point. You need to do some troubleshooting. Did you diff the files before the transplant? Can you post what you found? (just the diffs, not the entire files) Does the monitor work correctly under /any/ settings using the 9.3 file? - Carl

It's not really clear for me that between which two files I should make the diffs. But I experimented with the setting and found that the color depth setting causes the difference. If I set the color depth to 16 bit instead of 24 bit (all other setting are the same) I get good picture. This is the diff of the the xorg.conf file (16-bit vs 24-bit): /etc/X11> diff xorg.conf.16bit-OK xorg.conf.24bit-dark 3c3 < # Created on: 2005-09-25T22:16:50+0200. ---

Load "freetype" 77d76 < Load "extmod" 79c78,79 < Load "freetype"
Load "glx" Load "extmod" 115c115 < Modeline "1024x768" 86.18 1024 1120 1232 1264 768 769 772 803
Modeline "1024x768" 86.18 1024 1104 1216 1264 768 769 772 803 139c139 < DefaultDepth 16
DefaultDepth 24
I can send other info if you need it just please explain clearly what you want. I think the difference is related to the new setup in 10.0 (you can not set the resolution selectively as in 9.3; there is only a 1024x768 (XVGA) option in 10.0) since the xorg-x11 version are the same in my 9.3 and 10.0 system (xorg-x11-6.8.2-30 in 9.3 and xorg-x11-6.8.2-96 in 10.0). Hi Istvan, Unless there are some details missing, I'm afraid that Peter may have already explained your problem. The transplant eliminated the possibility that an incorrect configuration file was at fault. The next obvious weak link is the driver for that chip. Have you tried to confirm if it is still maintained and supported? - Carl
Hi Gabor, I understood a while ago that the S3-chipset isn' t supported anymore under X, while the driver is still there. If it works, good for you, if not, you're on your own. Because of this I had to replace a perfectly working S3 with a Matrox Millenium II on my Alpha. Regards On Saturday 24 September 2005 12:36, Gabor Istvan wrote:

Thanks, but I don't think that it is the case. In 9.3 I have xorg-x11-6.8.2-30 that makes a perfect picture and in 10.0 I have xorg-x11-6.8.2-96. I don't think that this difference is so big to cause such a difference in picture quality. Search google with this: s3.savage ((xfree OR x.org OR linux) AND 6.8)

Now I think that I was wrong. I have compared the driver files (savage_drv.o) of 9.3 and 10.0 and found that they are not the same. I replaced the driver file of 10.0 that of 9.3 and it is working well even with 24-bit color resolution. Thanks for all the suggestions!
