Folks,
I'm somewhat new to SuSE's kernel upgrade approach, so when I go the 9.0 patch website and saw several upgrade to the kernel ...2.4.21-192 to be precise ... do I only need to install the kernel source patch (I'm running a Pentium 4)?
You may not need to install a kernel source patch at all, if you don't make your own kernels. I usually do for the fun of it. You do need to upgrade the kernel (k_deflt, k_smp, etc) See: http://www.suse.com/de/security/2004_05_linux_kernel.html
Or must I install all the patches I see currently listed under security upgrades?
Hi Peter, I agree with John Pettigrew and Dylan, where they say: # If you use the Online Update system from YaST --> Software # then it will sort itself out for you - # i.e. it will work out which package(s) you need, # download them and install them all in one operation. It will also tell you if you need to do: mk_initrd, and run "lilo" and "reboot" However, if before or after you do that, you want to know what kernel rpm you are running, you can go (as root) to the YaST Control Center ---> Install & Remove Software: Then when it opens up, go to the "filter" and change it to "search." Then when it changes to Search enter "Kernel" in the search window, and click on "summary" and in the search mode: "contains". (unclick "description" so it gives you less info) Start the search and look at the results. Hopefully what I wrote is clear (and applies in 9.0) I am running 8.2 (but the differences I have seen between 8.0, 8.1 and 8.2 in this dialogue box haven't been all that great, so hopefully you can figure it out regardless of your Distro. Then look down the list for the checkmarked box labled "k_ ???" and it will show you what kernel you are running. In my case I am running: k_deflt-2.4.20-105, built 2/6/04 ("uname -a" done in a command terminal gives some good info too) Hope this helps, and removes confusion rather than adds to it.
