Sound problems with SuSE 8.2
I have been having problems with sound since installing 8.2, and would be really grateful for any help sorting it out. It all worked fine with 8.1, but since upgrading there's been nothing. My soundcard is a VT8233 AC97, and according to everywhere I've looked, it is recognised, configured as snd-card-0, running and all the rest - but no sound comes out of any of the audio programs, though they all think they are playing away quite happily. I've carefully studied Jim and Charlie's recent exchange but as a newbie I couldn't see anything which seemed relevant to my problem, likewise the Sound HOWTO. I've tried alsaconf etc and it claims to configure but, as said, no sound arrives. The latest stuff in /etc/modules.conf generated by alsaconf was # # Ssy1.wGwp93ydet3:VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller # --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. --- # --- ALSACONF verion 0.9.0 --- alias char-major-116 snd alias snd-card-0 snd-via8233 alias char-major-14 soundcore alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss options snd snd_major=116 snd_cards_limit=1 snd_device_mode=0666 options snd-via8233 snd_index=0 # --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. --- Can anyone please give me any help about what to do next? Since you didn't say specifically, I have to ask, Did you turn up the volume on one of the mixer programs? They often default to 0 volume or muted. Another, what happens when you go to yast -->hardware --> sound does the test sound play? see ya - -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com! -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.1 (GNU/Linux) iD4DBQE+nB5tBwgxlylUsJARAglJAJ9ofMYpgtvFsoltu1P8u7IJvac3kACXREj2 KrvPkRjlVeihBPjul15c0Q== =lVFL -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

I would guess, based on information I see in the error that I am not absolutely certain about, that you are using AMD with a VIA chip set which is not well, or at all, supported by the default kernels. Did your install auto-detect Athlon and install the correct kernel? I ended up getting the Mantel built k_athlon kernel to get my VIA chip set to work correctly. Well, I think it's OK. The response I get from uname -a is Linux huckleberry 2.4.20-4GB-athlon #1 Mon Mar 17 17:56:47 UTC 2003 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux The driver for VT8233 seems to be present as /lib/modules/2.4.20-4GB-athlon/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxxaudio.o but it still isn't producing any sound. What makes this more frustrating is that it worked OK under 8.1, and the newer kernel in 8.2 seems to have improved it worse.

Just a thought.

I've carefully studied Jim and Charlie's recent exchange but as a newbie I couldn't see anything which seemed relevant to my problem, likewise the Sound HOWTO. I've tried alsaconf etc and it claims to configure but, as said, no sound arrives.
I know it sounds too obvious but........ make sure your mixer has the volumes turned up? The program "alsamixergui" is pretty good. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

Have you tried any of the "mixer" applications, eg. kmix, etc, to ensure that the volume is turned up? Seems sill, I know, but every time I update/install sound apps on my system, the default behavior seems to be to shut the sill thing off so you think it's broken. `*8> -- Brad Shelton On Line Exchange http://ole.net Phone: 313-526-1111 Fax: 313-526-3333
Hi all, I've upgraded 2 weeks ago and have simliar problems. I've updated my hardware too. Before i used a Sblive player (emu10k1). Now i have a cmi8738 onboard chip (ASUS P4B533). After upgrading SuSE8.2 i heard no sound (but everything theems to be fine.) Afer pushing the mixer and my boxes to absolut maximum i've heard my sounds. So sound is ok now but my microphone didn't work. I use teamspeak as voicechat with my friends. When using voice activation i can see that the mike opens sometimes but theres is only noise on the otherside (friends). Maybe pushing your mixer and boxes to max help you too... Maybe someone can help with my microphone.... THX Martin -----Ursprüngliche Nachricht----- Von: Tony Price [mailto:tony@godspell.fsnet.co.uk] Gesendet: Dienstag, 15. Thanks to all who have replied. I thought it might be something as silly as muting or volumes set to zero, but I'm afraid not; as far as I can see there should be sound. But no, there wasn't any test sound from YAST hardware sound or from alsaconf.

See if you can activate gmixer or kmix, if yes, try to turn on all the volume control to max. I have weird experience with Intel motherboard with AC97 sound built-in, and the master volume can only control by phone in or video in (??), I give up.... Good luck. Dennis Tony Price wrote:
