Hello all: I have the following strange KDE/konqueror problem: In the konqueror file manager when I want to enter a directory (eg Documents) by double clicking I get this error message: KDEInit could not launch '/home/user/Documents'. Same thing with every directory. This is a new problem and only occurs in one user's session. Other users are not affected. I have suse 10.1 with newest KDE packages: kdebase3-kdm-3.5.4-112.1 kdebase3-ksysguardd-3.5.1-69 kdebase3-session-3.5.4-112.1 kdebase3-3.5.4-112.1 kdebase3-SuSE-10.1-58.7 kdebase3-extra-3.5.4-112.1 kdelibs3-arts-3.5.4-78.1 kdelibs3-3.5.4-78.1 How could I fix this problem? Thanks in advance, IG ps: I've updated kdebase and kdelibs yesterday and before that this problem did not show up. But if this problem is related to the new kde packages, I don't understand why only one user is affected. _______________________________________________________________________ Ne csak a lakást nézze, hanem a környéket is! Seams that, same way, some config file of that user (probably the konqueror one) got damaged or is not properly recognised by the update. The radical solution is to delete the .kde dir and start a new session for that user. The prudent solution is to discover what config file is causing it (maybe the .dir file that defines the Documents directory) and deleted or repair it. Lívio P.S. - That is the reason why I don't update important system (kernel, kde, gnome, etc.) between releases. There always are some side effects.

i had this problem a couple of years ago and had to nuke my ~/.kde directory to get it working again.

It's not a new problem. It happens when konqueror gets in some bad state. i can't tell you exactly what, except that i believe it's a corruption in the mimetype mappings, where directories are incorrectly mapped to an incorrect (or non-existent) opener handler. -- ----- stephan@s11n.net http://s11n.net "...pleasure is a grace and is not obedient to the commands of the will." -- Alan W. Hi: Thanks for the answers. I would not like to erase and replace the .kde directory yet since it has too many options set up and would be a pain to reset everything again in a completely new environment. Any other solution would be appreciated. In the meantime I reverted my kdebase packages to the last state that worked but did not help. Just a tip: the most important one (IMO) to backup and replace if you delete your ~/.kde is the kmailrc, since it contains your SMTP/POP settings. Since i no longer remember my SMTP passwords, and they're stored in kmailrc, i can't afford to lose that file ;). In my experience, the rest of the customizations can be re-set very quickly. Oh, and save your konqueror bookmarks.
Any other solution would be appreciated.
Think of "deleting ~/.kde" as "cleaning out the Windows registry" ;). Conceptually, it's not terribly much different.

You can try replacing just the konqueror config files, but when i had this problem that didn't fix it. i nuked ~/.kde, restored my kmailrc, then went through the 5 minutes of work to reconfigure my kicker/desktop. -- ----- stephan@s11n.net http://s11n.net "...pleasure is a grace and is not obedient to the commands of the will." -- Alan W. I agree with Stephan, but are your configs. Anyway, you can backup your actual .kde, deleted it, let KDE create a new one and then just move from the backup the config files you absolutely need. Regards Lívio

Thanks again. It seems I won't be able to avoid creating a new .kde after backing up the old one. IG _____________________________________________________________________ FotoMarket - digitális fotókidolgozás már 25 Ft-tól. http://ad.adverticum.net/b/cl,1,6022,99786,162268/click.prm
