[opensuse] Microsoft fonts
I'm probably going to answer my one question but why can't MS fonts be included in Linux distros? Is it because they are proprietary ? -- Duaine Hechler Piano, Player Piano, Pump Organ Tuning, Servicing & Rebuilding Reed Organ Society Member Florissant, MO 63034 (314) 838-5587 dahechler@charter.net www.hechlerpianoandorgan.com -- Home & Business user of Linux - 10 years -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Are you aware of anything M$ which is covered by GNU and therefore open source? If you want to use M$ truetype fonts *AND* you have a copy of Windows with a legit M$ licence then, if you want to use the truefonts, copy (as root) the *.ttf fonts (look for them in the Windows installation) which do NOT have weird characters in the names (those with "-" and "_" are acceptable) to /usr/share/fonts/truetype[1] and then run 'SuSEconfig'. No need for RPMs or whatever. [1] this directory may vary - check what it is in your version. You can also create a new directory in /usr/share/fonts and 'SuSEconfig --module fonts' will pick it up automatically. Philipp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Or the easy way, open YaST's software management and search for fetchmsttfonts and install it. Even easier: open a konsole and type: sudo zypper in fetchmsttfonts Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes. It looks like *you* aren't. :-p http://www.microsoft.com/opensource/ (There will always be this one guy that will know about the one obscure exception to your rule, and Murphy's Law dictates that this one guy will feel an urge to share his knowledge about that exception). Anyway, didn't Suse/Novell sign a deal with Microsoft? Yes, the Ms-PL and Ms-RL are recognized as open-source by the OSI. The Ms-PL is basically a BSD-style license. The Ms-RL is more GPL-style, but GPL-incompatible.

The detail you do care about is that it doesn't change the license under which openSUSE can acquire the Microsoft fonts. -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. bss@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/ \_/

In short, yes. Slightly longer: The license they are made available under is "odd" and prevents them from being packaged using the normal methods. Depending on the distribution, the fact that publicly released modifications are not allowed is also problematic. -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. bss@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/ \_/
