I'm considering the purchase of an Epson Perfection 3170 Photo Scanner (USB 2.0) for use on my 8.2 box. Has anyone had any experience using this scanner and if so would you provide your thoughts on it. Thanks, dave -- David C. The Epson Perfection 3170 Photo works great under Windows 98SE and Win2K and presumably XP and Mac 9.2.x and X 10.2.x. No drivers from Epson Kowa for Linux, yet. "The Perfection 3170 Photo (aka GT-9400UF) is scheduled to be supported by "Image Scan! for Linux" in a future release. As to "when", We can only say that we will release when it is ready (just like the Debian folks do ;-)." was what they told me Sept. 3, '03. Hope it doesn't take that long! http://www.epkowa.co.jp/english/linux_e/lsd_e.html No experience, yet, using it under Linux, Mac 9&X, Win XP. Works very well under Win98/2K. Stan

It also appears that Sane does not yet support this model scanner. Both IScan software from Epson and Sane support the 3200 model though, so you might want to consider your alternatives. Seems both the 3200 and 3170 have many of the same characteristics, except for the price. ;o) Sane url: http://www.sane-project.org/ Lee -- --- KMail v1.5.4 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...
Thanks Stan and Lee - I have a Nikon CoolScan II in the system now which I use almost exclusively under Linux, even though it only shipped with a windows driver and Nikon has so far refused to support Linux. What I been using to drive it is Vuescan from Hamrick software. The Hamrick Vuescan does a far better job of handling the CoolScan II than does the propietary Nikon software. Hamrick's page says his Vuescan program will handly ALL Epson scanners, so I was planning on using that to run the scanner. Bsed on what I've experienced tpo date with the CoolScan II I expect the software to be able to handle the Epson with aplomb. It's more the interface with which I'm concerned. The Nikon is SCSI which works so very well with Linux while the Epson 3XXX model scanners are all USB with the %500 42 bit 1640SU being the only SCSI model. So perhaps I should reword my question along the lines of has anyone had success running these USB scanners under Linux. I'm certain it would be somewhat difficult with this 7.3 box, but moving to an 8.2 or newer box very shortly and it's with that system that I'll be running the Epson. Whichever model I do finally select, it has to do 35 mm slides well or it won't make it into the system Thanks again for your replys, dave BandiPat wrote:

Dave, It will handle it very well. If the negative and slide scanning is anywhere close to my Epson 1650 photo, you'll be parking the Nikon in the corner. Epson has been very friendly with Linux and they are probably the best supported. I have an Epson Perfection 610 USB (a few years old) and it works 100% with SuSE. This is actually the best plug `n play that I have ever seen (Including on Windows) I connected it to the USB port and A window popped up telling me that the scanner has been detected and if I want to configure it. Yast's scanner tool popped up and it worked perfectly with all the defaults. This was SuSE 8.0 IIRC. In any case, I have never had any proplems on SuSE with the scanner (Except when I inadvertently uninstalled sane...) The USB support on SuSE 8.x is very good (In fact, I think it is on any kernel 2.4 system) A while ago I plugged in a USB memory stick and once I read in the SuSE SDB that it is mapped as a scsi drive, I could read and write to it, like a normal disk. ---<snip>--- Previously I had bought a new HP (3790c I think). It wasn't supported under linux, and in windows it seemed to run fine. Then I saw the Epson Perfection 2400 on sale and bought that and returned the HP, since the epson _is_ supported under linux. It was like going to a whole other world! The HP was so loud that people could hear it scanning over my phone! The Epson model is quiet with amazing quality, and _much_ better software for windows and it offers software for linux. It was plug and play with SuSE 8.2 connected via usb. An awesome scanner. As for HP...NO COMPARISON! OK, who's gonna send me my commission? :) Mike Sacco
FYI on VueScan from Hamrick and the Epson Perfection 3170 Photo = no go. Scanner isn't recognized messages same as with sane 1.0.10-36 from SuSE 8.2 Pro. Scanner is detected as an Epson but the model/product ID via USB isn't recognized so no driver loads. Epson has a new chipset for the 3170 (aka GT-9400UF) and the 1670 (aka GT-8400U) and they are not detected - yet. Stan
