For years, I have run WP8 for Linux under versions of SuSE up through 9.0. It requires using the old shared c libs (provided by SuSE through ver. 9.0). SuSE 9.1 does not include these old librariess; and, even if I install the old libraries (running an old .rpm) under SuSE 9.1, I am unable to install WP8 for Linux. (Why the need to *install* a program I was running for yrs? Because SuSE 9.1's update wiped out WP8 and the shared libs!) Can the NEW, RE-released WP8 for linux be made to install/run under SuSE 9.1?
The new WP 8 for Linux installs and works. It costs $29.95 + about $6 for shipping to the US. Installing the fonts that don't automatically install is very tricky, but they will help you on line. The entire right-hand keypad is dead if you use num-off, as I do. So the only delete key is on the little keypad next to the \ key. BOO! Also, this version does NOT read MS-WORD files. BOO! You can save files, and print to your installed printer without problems. If there is a way to use MS fonts, I don't know it, but they have a lot of their own that they call "type 1" fonts. Help via the net is fairly fast, but weekdays only. Good luck. --doug On Friday 28 May 2004 11:45, Jep wrote:

AFAIK, it does not read any .doc files, but I could be wrong. I get some .doc files from a friend for editing, and he makes them on a MAC, so I don't know what the heck they are, but OO can read them. It's a pain. --doug On Friday 28 May 2004 21:40, Gary wrote:

WP8 was a victim of the "billion second bug" and when that occurred, the filter for MSword files quit working. Corel never released a patch for the problem before going on hiatus on the Linux version, but another gentlemen did. It sounds as if Corel failed to fix the filter in the newly released version as well. I don't understand Corel wanting to test out the Linux market again with a crippled version of WP8. That's too bad, it's a good word processor. I do not know if the filter fix will work on the newer release, but I have it if you guys want to try it. It's small enough to pass in email, so just contact me off list. Lee -- --- KMail v1.6.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.0 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...
Re: WP filter for .doc files I suspect that the filter will not work for the present version. I think this version is compiled for Linux, whereas the earlier version that came out 2 or 3 years ago ran in WINE. If nayone knows better, please advise. --doug On Friday 28 May 2004 23:00, BandiPat wrote:

Then would the fellow who mentioned the patch please email me a copy, along with instructions on how and where to install it. Thanx in advance! --doug On Saturday 29 May 2004 16:38, BandiPat wrote:

For what it's worth, have any of you tried OpenOffice.org with the wp filter? I Had a bunch of old wp 6 docs I needed to use and it worked beautifully. I'm now ms and wp free. The rpm is called wpd2sxw-0.5.5.1-1.i386.rpm RA

It still has advanced features that are not available anywhere else, e.g. I can still import Windows WP specialized spellcheckers into Linux, have the ability to put text sideways, along the 11" margin, while keeping text normally down the page, and have available 100 or so spreadsheet functions available to me when using tables...etc. R> The rpm is called wpd2sxw-0.5.5.1-1.i386.rpm good information to have for future reference, did not know they even had this, thanks. -- Gary When the going gets tough, the tough take a coffee break.
