[SLE] XWindows Colour Depth
Here's the situation... I currently run XWindows at 24bpp (XSvga), logging in with KDM. My wife isn't familiar with the command line, hence I need to use a graphical login. But to run games like Doom, and Abuse (came with SuSE 6.3) in XWindows I need to run the X server at 8bpp. At the moment I need to switch to a console, and change runlevels before using the startx command to use the 8bpp server. (For some reason, I can't run the svgalib versions. Haven't investigated too much tho'). This is becoming a bit annoying, and apart from anything else means that anyone wishing to play these games needs to know how to use linux quite well. Is there any way for me to change the colour depth to 8bpp without having to resort to the above method? Maybe something similar to the CTRL-ALT-+ keys? I remember a few years ago that changing down the resolutions using the CTRL-ALT-+ keys did switch the colout depth. I have since changed almost everything in the computer, including graphics cards (now 3DFX). And this doesn't happen anymore. Maybe I need to put something into the XF86Config? Switch to Xfree 4.0?? Any help would be much appreciated. AFAIK there's no way to do this. What about starting a second X server with a color depth of 8 bpp? tartx -- :1 -bpp 8 You can then use Ctrl-Alt-F[78] to switch between the two.
