Changing kernel in the install distribution. How?

Hi. A brief summary about the question in the subject line. I discovered, in this ML, that my motherboard was non supported any more by SuSE, starting for 8.0 (the last one I could install from CD). So I thought to get the distro, build a new kernel for my system and substitute it in the distro. Then burning the CD and start the installation. But what must be changed in the distribution to make this work? Before, I tried to "force" YOU to get the new system from the hard disk, where the new distribution (btw.. 8.2, as a test to get to 9.0) is, but failed. "Could not mount" or something alike. Any hint? Thank you, Ermanno Polli
