Re: Re: [SLE] binding tcp socket : address already in use
Thank you, Jerry for answering so quickly to my msg. I checked the status and it indicated that the server is up and running! But I still have the biding error in my /var/log/messages. Shall I worry about this? moussa

Can anybody please help solve this problem. Whenever I start named I have the following message:
biding tcp socket : address already in use. What this means is that some process is already listening on the named socket. Check to make sure that named is not already running. Additionally, sockets have a certain persistence. When you close a socket, there is a short time where it cannot be reopened, but we are talking seconds, not minutes. You should use the named script in /etc/init.d. SuSE sets up symlinks in /sbin, (eg. rcnamed). rcnamed status # checks to see if named is running rcnamed stop # Stop named rcnamed start # Start named rcnamed restart # stops and starts named.

If the socket is currently bound, the system call will fail.
If you see this message on system startup, then it indicates that you are trying to run more than one name daemon. You can stop the name daemon, wait a short time, then start it. You should not see that message. -- Jerry Feldman <gaf@blu.org> Boston Linux and Unix user group http://www.blu.org PGP key id:C5061EA9 PGP Key fingerprint:053C 73EC 3AC1 5C44 3E14 9245 FB00 3ED5 C506 1EA9
