Any reason not to use kernel sources from www.kernel.org ?

I have always used the updated mantel/ kernels from SuSE, but as I need the EXT3 updates badly, I have no choice but to download kernel sources from www.kernel.org, as the mantel versions do not include these yet. Is there any obvious / serious reason not to use the www.kernel.org versions on SuSE systems (7.2 and 8.0) I would prefer to stick with the mantel/kernels but SuSE is not merging kernel sources with www.kernel.org very often. Thanks in advance Bo Jacobsen

One obvious one would be if you use or depend on modules that don't appear in the official kernel tree, but do in Hubert's builds... -- James Ogley, Unix Systems Administrator, Pinnacle Insurance Plc james.ogley@pinnacle.co.uk www.pinnacle.co.uk +44 (0) 20 8731 3619 Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 8.0) Updated GNOME RPMs for SuSE Linux: www.usr-local-bin.org ********************************************************************** CONFIDENTIALITY.This e-mail and any attachments are confidential and may also be privileged. I have found Vanilla kernels work well with Suse. This is a small business / home office situation. Brian Marr On Thursday 12 September 2002 17:14, Bo Jacobsen wrote:

I've been a SuSE'r for well what 4 years, ever since 6.0 and I have always sused Vanilla kernels, the only thing I like about using the SuSE 8.0 Kernel is they have patched the hell out of it to support practically every type of hardware. They have also added many feature enhancements. Doing this on yoru own would be a pain. Since the 8.0 Kernel is fairly up to date I think it would be better to use it that vanilla kernel. The only reason I would move up is if you need a recent kernel feature.

Hey all, following Richard Bos' instructions, I've been using apt-get to install Gnome 2.0. As far as I can see, it's installing things just fine. However, in the login screen, there's a Gnome option. It's Gnome 1.4, still. How do I get Gnome 2.0 to be available as an option at the login screen ? Jacob

Jacob, you can add Gnome2 through preferences >system> login manager> sessions, or through kcontrol. I had a problem similar to this and kcontrol wouldn't take gnome2 because a name wasn't given, or something like that when i ran SuSEconfig. So the all knowing Richard had me edit a kdm script. Here is Richard's reply, the original post was newbie has problems in the archives. Franklin
su to root and tried through kcontrol > system > login but that has lost it's power. i only have kde, gnome and gnome2 in that list but every other choice is in the real menu.
When i ran SUSEconfig, i noticed a gnome error, ...
Executing /sbin/conf.d/SuSEconfig.susewm... SuSEwm: ERROR: gnome: no "name" defined !
How can I fix this or add gnome2 to the choices? I'm not sure these are related but gnome2 showed up for a little while then I got something and it no longer does. Tried uninstalling susewm, but that didn't fix it, although the error went away. It may be the upgrade kdm, or kwm, just a hypothesis. I know someone posted with this a few eeks ago, but i couldn't find it when I scoured the archives.
Look for kdmrc, via: locate kdmrc Giving you a lot of options probably. Now find which file is in use on your system. This can be done via: locate kdmrc | grep -v md5 | xargs grep ^SessionTypes= Again gives a lot of output. By looking at the value (and the order of the sessions) you can determine the kdmrc files that is currently in use. Add gnome2 to the SessionType and your done :) -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless On Thursday 12 September 2002 7:18 pm, Jacob Saaby Nielsen wrote:

If you go to the kernel sources sources (!!), i.e., the src.rpm file, you can see the SuSE patches and then apply them yourself to a stock kernel. Even if they're a version behind, they'll probably either work or fail to apply. And you can apply them selectively. That's a very unofficial answer, of course. Paul
