I have heard of a problem that exists with compaq system. It appears that compaq uses a modified IDE/EIDE interface which causes the problem you stated, ie if you setup a drive on a compaq you won't be able to use it on a non compaq or non-compaq to compaq will provide the same result. So be carefull when swaping disks between compaq's and non compaq systems. Or how to remove traces of compaqs propritery &hit format, fdisk /mbr has no effect on the drive. Im trying to install on another disk that no matter where I pace lilo when it boots all i get is LI. IVe set the drives cylinders heads and sectors in fdisk... ran dos fdisk /mbr nothing! ome HD-producer offer a program for that. It could be worth searching their websites. I accidently left my computer magazine with the address in britain last month. ;-( but it was one of the big ones and the program would work on other disks as well.

The program is available at Maxtor's ftp server: <A HREF="ftp://ftp.maxtor.com/pub/ide/llfutil.exe"><A HREF="ftp://ftp.maxtor.com/pub/ide/llfutil.exe</A">ftp://ftp.maxtor.com/pub/ide/llfutil.exe</A</A>> The computer magazine Jürgen referred to (c't) warned that low level formating older hard disks (as a rule of thumb hardisks < 504 MB should be considered old) can destroy them. Thanks Stefan I dld the file to use in the future. IN the mean time Ive found an uncontamminated disk <grin> that I installed on.... so I dont have to deal with this rite now. However for what its worth a fellow in my lug mentioned this method of wiping a drive. I figgured some on this list would like to know. whne I wipe the drive Ill report back here ;-) thanks again ============================= If you do have another unix box on hand try: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda /dev/hda (in the of var) being the device you want to wipe clean. When it's done...you have a nice zero'fied hd which should be all set to go. ================================= rob Bookmarks <A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm"><A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A">http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A</A>> - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
Just an idea , I saw a post thet the compacts use a semi propiettry ide controler. So you may want to change the controler , or if it built in add another one in and disable the onboard controller , then hook op the drive ? At 05:45 PM 12/5/1998 +0000, you wrote:

Compaq does a LOT of NON-standard things with their hardware, and is one reason that they are NOT on my approved list to buy at Cornell. Fred _______ Frea A. Miller, Systems Admin. Cornell Univ.
