Is there manyone here who *can* play audio Cds on his suse 8.2 box ? If so, which kernel are you using ? No problems here using 8.2 k_deflt-2.4.20-86 with a plexwriter cd writer, kscd worked out of the box. I had the usual nuisance fiddling about finding the right mixer control to adjust in order to get anything out of the speakers. It also works fine at home with an ordinary generic cd-rom and the stock install kernel. The business of having the speaker output mixed to zero does bug me every time I install SuSE though, and for reasons of senility I can never seem to go straight to the right mixer control to get sound to play, always having to search about in various unlikely dialogues. I understand the reasoning that they don't want to blow up your speakers, but it would be nice if some other scheme could be arrived at. I didn't do any special tricks to get either machine working, which is probably unhelpful for those for whom sound isn't functioning - good luck. Best Fergus

Works fine, even with those CDs that I understand are illegal in the Netherlands because they violate Philips' patents. I use the SuSE default kernel and noatun or xmms. The only thing I've found is that if I want to use all six speakers, I have to copy the file from CD to /tmp and a .wav and play from there. I have a creative sblive 5.1 (EMU10k1) soundcard. -- JDL Non enim propter gloriam, diuicias aut honores pugnamus set propter libertatem solummodo quam Nemo bonus nisi simul cum vita amittit.

Me too. The only difference is I have 4 speakers. It's the same way, though. If playing the CD player or TV tuner, I only have sound in the front two speakers. If playing wavs, oggs, mp3s, I get sound in all 4 speakers. The reason why is because it is outputting directly to the soundcard. For CD's you can use cdparanoia-plugin with XMMS which rips the CD in realtime and play as wav. Unfortunately, the homepage is down, but you can get a copy here: http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=cdparanoia-plugin&submit=Search+...&system=&arch= Charles -- Running Windows on a Pentium is like having a brand new Porsche but only be able to drive backwards with the handbrake on. I play CDs quite regularly using XMMS. Play Location -> /dev/cdrom (generic 52x CD player) Play Location -> /dev/cdrecorder (my HP 9900 DVD player/CD-RW combo) I never use any other players so can't vouch for them working or not. Mine has no problems. I am presently using k_deflt-2.4.20-86, alsa 0.9.4-0.pm (packman's version). I usually use KsCD, but have tried xmms as well. KDE 3.1.2, creative AWE64 ISAPNP version. Yessir, Alasplayer has *always* worked for me, and last night on a couple of suggestions, I found half my problem with kscd (the other half was my own stupidity...I had the wire lead from the dvd in the wrong plugin on my soundcard). For sound to work on my system with kscd, I found out that depending on what plugin I used on my soundcard, it used 'Aux' or 'CD' in alsamixer to raise or lower the volume for kscd. 'But'...since kscd doesn't seem to utilize all the functions of emu10k1 with alsamixer, I stay with alsaplayer, since it's much more 'adjustable' (like a graphics equalizer). If YaST2 doesn't get you up to speed, try alsaconf in a konsole as root and see how that works. John - -- - -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- Version: 3.12 G! d- s+:++ a?
