ok then, boot up the rescue disk and run e2fsck on the root partition. I don't think you can use /dev/root from the rescue though, you have to find out which partition it really is (hda1, hdb2 or whatever). Try ls -l /dev/ root and see what it is

Sorry, this was silly, you obviously know which partition it is since you can mount it and look at the fstab.
