There's a lot of information with the kernel documentation, in particular the svga.txt file.
I use vga=0x317 on a 15" CRT monitor. That is 1024x768x16bit. Maybe you can start with that and work your way up (if you have a larger monitor or want more colours). Strange that the newer card won't handle the old setting, but I've seen this before on nVidia cards and also Intel onboard graphics (like the 815 I have at work). Anybody know why this happen?
