[SLE] Online update - I don't understand it
Hi all, Pls bear with me as I'm really new with Suse. I use Suse 10.1. and trying to do online update. I have searched the list and it seems that the online update mechanism in 10.1 is new and have some issues such as libzypp that we must update it first. Well, on the online update icon on the lower righ of the screen there are 132 updates availble. So I click on the update button, but then I've got this error message: Dependency Resolution Failed. Establishing script:libzypp-patch-zmdrestart.sh-2-1533-1.noarch [SUSE-Linux-10.1-Updates] This would invalidate script:libzypp-patch-zmdrestart.sh-2-1533-1.noarch [SUSE-Linux-10.1-Updates]. Marking this resolution attempt as invalid. In the list someone suggests to do Online update once to resolve the libzypp issue. But if I open the Yast > Software > Online Update. There is no package available for updates. I try to search libzypp, right click> update. But the version available is the same. Thus when I click "Accept" it's just closed. How to resolve this? There should be 40+ patches visible in YOU. They should be visible on second start of YAST Online Update at least. I had the same problem until I got me the latest smart packages (something like 0.42xx)at guru.suse. Have a look at some older posts. After installing the smart packages I was able to get the latest libzypp and after having that on my machine I opted for a update of everything else (139 packages in my case). I am not on my 10.1 machine so I can not give you details but above way gave me a complete updated system. -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Thanks for all the suggestion. I finally reformated and reinstalled the box. And then did an online update during install. It succeeded. In fact, YOU specifically suggested me to update libzypp and yast2. There is only one issue left for me to implement Opensuse 10.1 onto my branches, that is to be able to VNC into screen 0. -- Fajar Priyanto | Reg'd Linux User #327841 | Linux tutorial http://linux2.arinet.org 22:36:45 up 6 min, 2.6.17-1.2139_FC5 GNU/Linux Let's use OpenOffice. http://www.openoffice.org -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

I find it tends to be hit 'n miss. Ciao, Marcus If you are stuck, go to:
http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/rpm-navigation.php?cat=/System/smart and use the Smart programs to do your first updates and then use Online Update after that. Have you guys had a look to http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs especially http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs#General_issues ? In the 2nd section it is said to do the 1st package management update using "yast online_update" (aka "you") using super user rights. This "you" run will offer by default just two packages (I have no idea if selecting more packages is wise or even not ...) which will select more necessary updates automatically. After this run of "you" has been ended every subsequent online update should be possible with "zen-updater".

By reading available documentation in advance ... SCNR -- Never give up ! Best regards, Reinhard. "Software is like a parachute. SCNR How many of You out there have read those document before You installed Suse 10.1. Suse 10-0 did not have that funny little thing, is it called Zen? What are the meaning with this little "thing", was Susewatcher not good enough, or?
I did a second install of opensuse 10.1, and I did the update with YOU, I did not read it any place, but it was a thing to try before I got back to 10.0. Now I am writing these on my new Opensuse 10.1 Gunnar -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com
Hi!
Suse 10-0 did not have that funny little thing, is it called Zen? What are the meaning with this little "thing", was Susewatcher not good enough, or?
I wonder that my self... "you" has worked perfectly for me over the years... zen never works! I wish the developers removed it, installed something that works like, you, apt, yum... zen is crap! I guess the truth is somewhere in the middle. Sometimes "you" caused some minor trouble and "zen" works somehow ...

If you take a look onto http://en.opensuse.org/Using_10.1#Work_around you will find e.g. "smart" as as something like a recommendation ...
Sorry guys, just a bit angry

A very good question ... I guess the number of readers tends against zero ...

That was discussed many, many times, so we might not deepen this again ...

Well done ... On the other hand we should get a reliable solution with reasonable working speed for online-update soon.
