No doubt way to generic a question, but what is the hot setup these days in regards to downloading music, I don't mind paying a little..I had in mind a membership of sorts as a birthday gift for my 13 y o son, further, are mp3's worth a darn ? better than burning them to a cd ?are they the way to go, as long as ya have a portable player? thank you all very much for your time, I don't feel like I contribute my fair share to this list..the vast majority of what I see here everyday is over my head, but trying to change that a little everyday.. I'm on 8.0 if it helps.. Lee
MP3's have a mixed chorus--some folks say they're 90% of the original, others say they're 10%. I've played a lot of (live) music in my life, by which is to say I used to gig out on piano and guitar, and sometimes Dobro and bass, and most mp3's, played from my computer over a not-so-bad hi-fi system, sound pretty good to me. RANT ON: I don't mind the music companies making a big stink about d/l-ing of current music, that might, maybe, make someone legitimate money. What p's me off is that there are tons of copyrighted stuff that is all out of print, stuff from the 40's and 50's, and there is no way to get a copy of it except from the Net. And copyrights are designed to last far beyond your lifetime or mine. Part of that is due to the Walt Disney empire, BTW; since they were afraid of losing the rights to Mickey Mouse, they lobbied congress to change the law. Even before, it was ridiculous. Disney is protecting stuff from the early 30's. Enuf. RANT OFF --doug At 20:10 09/10/2003 -0400, lee wrote:

Just yesterday I read about http://www.emusic.com I never used them so I cannot comment about the quality nor the selection. They do seem to offer a Linux download manager which is required to download music. If you do use them I would appreciate hearing about your experience. I have used e-music for sometime :). Its $9.99 a month for pretty much unlimited downloads (there is a large limit, but not one I have ever encountered). The download manager can have issues with SuSE 8.2, read the technical help and if that does not solve the issue I have found that running a Squid proxy and having the download manager access through that actually make it work. They had issues getting the manager running on distro's like SuSE 8.2 due to the differences in glibc between SuSE and Debian stable (why do developers think using Debian stable to be the best with which to develop on?). Selection wise, well you're not going to find Jennifer Lopez or Britney Spears or that type of music. It is widespread and caters to many different tastes... You can get a free trial, 50 downloads I believe so best to try it and find out :). Matt On Wed, 2003-09-10 at 19:14, Avi Schwartz wrote:

Another option is to subscribe to http://www.allofmp3.com Best as I can tell, it's a legal site - as in they license the music much like Apple is doing with the iPod site. C.

Looks like its hosted in Russia and it does look legal. It actually looks better than the overhyped Apple service too, can get a 1000 files at 14.95 a month, which is not bad. Thanks for the info, oh and they mention Ogg Vorbis! Matt
