I want to compile the latest kernel source using menuconfig. I read the kernel how-to and miscellaneous other documentation on the subject but still haven't found anything that explains the options in menuconfig.
The journey on which you are about to embark requires an intimate knowlege of your motherboard an other hardware. This is one of my favorite resources for tuning: http://www.linux.com/tuneup/ Specifically, I benefitted a lot from reading this document: http://www.linux.com/tuneup/database.phtml/Kernel/000115.html The author is a little too gung-ho for me, but these guidelines are an excellent starting point. Remember, modular kernel design is a feature that the core development group has worked VERY hard on perfecting. USE THEM :). I have my ethernet, my SCSI card, IDE-SCSI emulation module, all of the network and disk types (except ext2 and ide), and my sound and sound card built as modules. I've never had a bit of trouble. -- -=|JP|=- (Resident GNUbie) Jon Pennington | SuSE Linux 6.2 -o) super-suser@excite.com | Kernel 2.2.10 /\\ Kansas City, Missouri | AMD K6-III 450 _\_V ________________________________________________________________ Get FREE voicemail, fax and email at http://voicemail.excite.com Talk online at http://voicechat.excite.com -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Does anyone know where I can get the key for the star office evaluation? Can't access www.stardivision.com and I thought I remember something about Sun purchasing them. I figure I should post this about once a month *grin* /needed info The following was posted to staroffice.com.support.announce Dear StarOffice User, with this posting we provide a small patch, to disable the need for register each time, when you make changes in the user settings of older StarOffice 5.1 versions. Please do not use this patch for the latest StarOffice 5.1 version from Sun. Download the below listed patch into the StarOffice directory, where all the DLL's (or shared Lib's) are located. After downloading execute this patchprogram. StarOffice 5.1 patch for disabling the registration mechanism. OS/2 ftp://ftp.stardivision.de/pub/support/so51/os2icci3/regpatch.exe Linux ftp://ftp.stardivision.de/pub/support/so51/unxlnxi/regpatch Solaris Intel ftp://ftp.stardivision.de/pub/support/so51/unxsoli/regpatch Solaris Sparc ftp://ftp.stardivision.de/pub/support/so51/unxsols/regpatch Windows ftp://ftp.stardivision.de/pub/support/so51/wntmsci/regpatch.exe The patchprogram makes a backup copy of the DLL (shared Lib) and changed this file afterwards. Please make sure, that StarOffice is not running during this change. If you have questions or problems with the patch, please describe the problem in our installation newsgroup for your operating system. Let me turn the question around. When is it better to include something in the kernel rather than load it as a module (assuming the kernel configuration allows you to load it as a module)?
