My machine is really slow since loading v9.0 I really can't find any reason for it. It can take 3-4 minutes to start a program for instance. There is nothing reported in messages as being unusual, vmstat doesn't show any mysterious paging, (my machine has 1GB Ram), top shows cpu idle as 98%, and I have no idea where to look next... Can anybody give me a clue? Phil

On your grub boot line do you have 'desktop' (w/o quotes) as a parameter? If no, add it. If yes, remove it. My systems behaves similar to what you describe if I do not have desktop as a grub boot line parameter. Stan
Sorry,
Where do I find my grub boot line?

I read the description and understand the concept, but how does this relate
to the desktop word in grub's menu.lst?

<SNIP> I read the description and understand the concept, but how does this relate to the desktop word in grub's menu.lst? </SNIP> Last paragraph from the SuSE web page... The "desktop" boot parameter sets ten times shorter time slices (1-31ms) and ten times higher timer interrupt rate (1000/s) than standard. Omitting it leaves you with the standard settings (10-310ms time slices, 100 time interrupts per second). Alternatively, the timer frequency can be set manually to a multiple (or fraction of) 100 by using HZ= boot parameter. The time slices can be set by SCHED_MIN/MAXTIMESLICE in the kernel sysconfig file. Damon
I must remember to wake up before I get up next time...
Thanks
Phil
