SMTP Authentication Question
I run my own home mail server avoiding many of the mail problems experienced by my ISP (they were using @home). Now they are hosting their own servers. All was working just fine until last week when mail being sent from home to accounts on their system bounced (my wife likes to use her isp account in the from field). It turns out that they have quietly turned on authentication. It was easy enough to fix by turning this on in my win email clients and pointing outgoing mail to their mail server instead of my own. However, I now have two questions: 1. is there a way that I can enable sendmail on my own server to authenticate with my isp's server and go back to using my own server for outgoing mail? I have set up sendmail authentication for LOGIN PLAIN but am lost on what to do next. 2. now that I've enabled authentication on my own sendmail server it was easy to turn on authentication in the win mail clients (a couple of mouse clicks) but I can't work out how to do the same with pine on my linux systems? I've asked twice on the list now, but haven't got an answer. Yahoo were supposed to switch on SMTP authentication on 30th Jan but it seems they haven't done so - my outbound mail still goes out OK at the moment. I'm hoping KDE3 (and hence the new Kmail) will be out before they finally switch it on, which will allow me to use the same client. Otherwise I'll have to switch to Netscape6. Or, just maybe, you'll find out how to do the SMTP authentication thing on your own sendmail server and post the solution to the list (or, at the very least, me!) -- 9:21am up 56 days, 17:26, 1 user, load average: 0.06, 0.05, 0.01

I had noticed that, and was thinking of sending you a private e-mail to ask whether your experience was the same. One thing that struck me as odd about Yahoo's original e-mail was (a I recall), that it said that some MUA's were already correctly configured to use SMTP Auth - which seems to me to imply that the server could, at that time, accept both Auth and non-Auth mail. If, however, I try using Auth at the moment the posting is rejected. Regards, Geoff _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Authentication is definitely switched on - on 29th Jan I switched my girlfriend's email details over to authenticated SMTP on Netscape, which is the client she uses. She grumbled that she now has to enter a password, but it all works correctly. I also set my own Netscape details and mine works too - I'm just not using it at the moment, but it's there and working when my hand is forced. -- 10:06am up 56 days, 18:11, 1 user, load average: 0.06, 0.03, 0.00

Thanks Derek. It is all rather weird then. When this issue arose I posted a question on the Sylpheed list as to whehter Auth was working under Sylpheed and several people confirmed that it was - including US users where, they tell me, Yahoo has been using Auth for some time.
