[opensuse] Should I be worried about my disk?
Hello list mates, Recently, I have been seeing the following log entries from smartd: Oct 7 10:07:56 zaphod smartd[4623]: Device: /dev/sda [SAT], SMART Prefailure Attribute: 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate changed from 107 to 105 Oct 7 10:07:56 zaphod smartd[4623]: Device: /dev/sda [SAT], SMART Usage Attribute: 187 Reported_Uncorrect changed from 32 to 26 Oct 7 10:07:57 zaphod smartd[4623]: Device: /dev/sda [SAT], ATA error count increased from 68 to 74 Oct 7 10:37:56 zaphod smartd[4623]: Device: /dev/sda [SAT], 2 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors Oct 7 10:37:56 zaphod smartd[4623]: Device: /dev/sda [SAT], 2 Offline uncorrectable sectors Especially the last two lines worry me. However, Googling tells me that it's not really an issue and that the two pending sectors should be remapped when the system does another read of the sector. Smartctl after a long test tells me the disk passes the test, so a failure is not imminent. The disk is about a year old now. Thoughts? Ideas? All hard drives have a percentage of extra sectors that are used to remap bad sectors to. It's not uncommon for bad sectors to appear and for the drive to still be fine. I would be more worried about the drive temp. That could indicate a mechanical failure if it gets over 50C under load. As always, a backup is a good idea. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Err, I aways hate to say no, so I won't. But I will tell you that on one very old 10.3 box I have, I have been receiving the following disk errors for at least the past 4 years and it is still just fine: Oct 7 05:23:45 lakehouse smartd[3500]: Device: /dev/sda, 10 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors Oct 7 05:23:45 lakehouse smartd[3500]: Device: /dev/sda, SMART Prefailure Attribute: 8 Seek_Time_Performance changed from 237 to 243 Oct 7 05:53:45 lakehouse smartd[3500]: Device: /dev/sda, 10 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors Oct 7 05:53:45 lakehouse smartd[3500]: Device: /dev/sda, SMART Prefailure Attribute: 8 Seek_Time_Performance changed from 243 to 242 You will notice these messages repeat like clockwork every 30 minutes. And, no I am not worried about the data on this box. I'm really kind of curious to see how long it lives like this. It's an ancient dell P3-866 box w(512M) with an old NVidia 5700 Ultra card in it. Runs KDE3+Compiz at blazing speed, even pushing it to a 22" monitor. (I don't want to know what kde4 would do to it:) So, If you are concerned about your data, get a new drive, if this is like a machine for your kids or something and they are just in the playing ages (3-10), then just let it keep going and see what happens. My understanding of that message when I have seen it is that the drive needs 10 sectors to fix currently unreadable sectors, but in the absence of any more reserved sectors, (reserve exhausted) it has fallen back to simply not using those unreadable sectors. Even tho linux has had the ability to avoid bad sectors for many many years, this is not a good situation to be in. -- __________________________________________________________ Somebody stoled my tag line, so now I have this rental... I keep trying to kill it, but it won't die! As long as it makes it until November, then I'll buy a new drive for 11.2 ;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Four years!? That's a long time, I was worried that the disk would fail quite soon. Although of course your disk is not my disk... Seeing as yours is an older disk, it might not be uncommon to get bad sectors. However, mine is relatively new, so I think it's a bit early to get bad sectors that can't be remapped.

Yes, they do appear like clockwork, every 30 minutes. If it was an older system, I think I would be inclined to just let it run.

I have a good back-up, and can go back four weeks if needed. However, reading the comments in this thread, I will be looking into getting a replacement. Similarly to what others have suggested, go and order replacement disks! I had similar issues with a bunch of 1TB disks (I don't want to be officially blamed by the company, so I'm not going to disclose them here, but it's a company from Korea starting with an S...) - I wanted to get 4 new disks, including all the failing disks, I had 14! disks in the end which I had to test myself and manage returning the failing ones... If you don't mind, I'd like to know what kind of model your failing one is; if you don't want to be explicit (like I didn't want to be), just find a smart description, like I did ;-) FWIW, I'm not going to buy any new HD from the not named company!
Thanks in advance,
Joop

Hello Manfred,
Similarly to what others have suggested, go and order replacement disks!
I will run a full offline test with a utility from the company in question. Should that reveal ANY trouble with the disk, I will order a replacement. After all, it's still under warranty.

Yep, thanks for sending that info. That means there's another company starting with S from which I wouldn't buy a new harddisk anymore... as mine weren't Seagate ones... ;-)
Thanks for the help,
Joop
