USB sticks: previous messages and my recognition problem
Dear all, I am trying to use my SONY USB 128M memory stick under Linux, but after trying to use the instructions posted by Silviu on 14th of June I had to stop suddendly because of this error reported in dmesg: I/O recognition error: maybe there is no medium inserted in the drive even if lights are on in the stick itself. Using the command # mount I get no line for the medium I would like to set up for USB storage, so I suppose that the USB device is not automounted or recognised on the fly. Do you have any suggestion about fixing the problem? Please not that I use a USB modem without any problem .... Thanx in advance L
Perhaps you should look for something like: /media/usb-storage-A904041300683:0:0:0p1 I'm using a Sony Micro Vault 128 MB (same as you?) and it was automatically mounted on that address the first time, I used it on Linux. Any time the stick is connected, I can directly access its content at the address shown above. Laurent P.S.: it's possible that the Stick and the Modem interfere, but I'm not sure... L In a shell (root): Try lsub (as root) and it should show something about your stick. So your Stick is recognized. Then try (as root) mount /dev/sda1 /mnt.
Change to /mnt and you should see something. If this doesn't work, feel free to ask again :-) Al

A question before trying: do I have to check for some modules in order to make the device to work? I have just found the hint " make yourself sure that usb-storage module is loaded" ... LM

The stick is recognised as USB SONY memory stick
So your Stick is recognized.
Yes, it is.
Then try (as root) mount /dev/sda1 /mnt.
No way! The kernel message is the same about missing medium in the drive. Do I have to check something more about SCSI ? The usb-storage module is loaded. LM

Is support for the vfat filisystem loaded? (Otherwise, try 'modprobe vfat') You can also try 'mount -t vfat /dev/sdax /mnt' where x = 4 (sometimes) or even '/dev/sda' alone. My Sony Memory Sticks have behaved in strange ways since SuSE 7.2. Hope it helps.

I have not checked yet, but I can recognize a fat32 partition that is shared between WXP and Linux, and vfat is used in mounting the partition itself.
You can also try 'mount -t vfat /dev/sdax /mnt' where x = 4 (sometimes) or even '/dev/sda' alone. My Sony Memory Sticks have behaved in strange ways since SuSE 7.2.
It does not work with mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mnt, I will check for other number .... L
Hope it helps.

When I first bought a Sony Memory stick I had problems mounting it in Linux, this was due to corruption of the partition table that windows seemed to ignore but Linux didn't like. I simply used fdisk in linux to create a new DOS partition table on the stick and after that all was well both on Linux and windows. -- David Bottrill david@bottrill.org www.bottrill.org Registered Linux user number 330730

You talking about a Sony MicroVault or isi it the original Sony Memory stick (often used in Sony's digital cameras, handhelds, etc...)? Laurent -- Linux is like an indian tent: no Windows, no Gates and an Apache inside

It is a Sony MicroVault: does this fact create problems in recognition/ mounting/fdisk operations ???
