[opensuse] changing video formats
Hi all, I think I know that "transcode" does this, but last time I asked a question on that list the reply was effectively "if you have to ask, you shouldn't be using transcode", so I thought I'd try here. I'd like to recode some digital video from the full resolution of my camera down to something less. Basically I have DVD stuff I burned ages ago using something under windows (Nero, I think?) and it's 640x480, or some such. But anyway, it's big, and high res. I'd like to be able to shrink it down to something smaller, mainly in terms of space, but I'd be happy enough to lose resolution too, say to 320x240? It would be useful if I could turn it back into a more "ordinary" format, like mpg, maybe. Any suggestions? And if I have to use "transcode" is there a comprehensible manual for the trivial user? MPlayer and MEncode will do what you want. There is a very comprehensive online manual, and lots of forum messages about different options. You could also install File2divx3pass which is available on pacman and gives you a gui to set most options. I am sure there are others about. Try ffmpeg. The help is good and pretty extensive with ffmpeg --help. It really does a good job and is quite fast. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 11.1 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

As others suggested, transcode, ffmpeg and mencoder can all do this. If you would like a gui for doing it, i would recommend avidemux (package available from packman repository).
