RE: [SLE] After install of 8.1, Opera 6.03 will not start.
I think you may have misunderstood my message. I think SuSE 8.1 if very good and the new Yast is also very good. I did not even have to edit any files or anthing for the Nvidia card which I have had to do in 7.3 and 8.0. Overall, 8.1 is fantastic. It is hard for even Windows to beat it now. I have three applications, one at home that I run under Win4Lin and two at work, that prevents me from eliminating Microsoft completely from my computers. The problem with Opera was a minor one and was caused by me not checking the DVD first before installing from the rpm that I had previously downloaded. Suse definitely deserves a contragutations on this new version. I installed the opera-6.03-20020813.2-shared-qt.i386.rpm that I downloaded from opera earlier and had the same problem. I uninstalled it via Yast2 and installed the opera on the 8.2 DVD and everything started working.

I am extremely disapointed with 8.1! I just updated my Compaq laptop and, although it took over an hour which is the fault of the slow laptop, everything works, including my old Opera!! Can't depend on anything any more! The only thing I did differently on this install is I let YAST delete the apps it couldnt update. When done even my XMMS & Synaptic worked. Well, it comes up and goes through the motions but wont connect for updating for obvious reasons. I had installed such things as gnucash, apt and some others without yast's help and apparently in the upgrade it finds those things it doesn;t like and if you let it delete them all goes well, at least it did on this one. Next I will do my main machine. If that one goes as well, I may give up on Linux and go back to windows. How I miss the freezes and reboots after any changes! I guess the moral of this little saga is that Yast is smarter than we think it is. Good going, SuSE, and thanks, Richard

Art , I agree with you completely. My previous answer was an obviously failed attempt at a little sarcastic humor. I started with 6.3 way back when and it was a real struggle. 8.0 was a breeze and 8.1 is even easier, if you dont try to outsmart Yast. My next task is to remove all my windows stuff to a spare hard drive and go Linux solo on my main machine. I'll have one machine with windows in case I have to go back for some reason. I really do miss those reboots, though! Richard
