Thunderbird NNTP permission denied error.
Opening the Thunderbird mail client today I was greeted with the following message. A news (NNTP) error occured: Permission denied: To much connection time. 1. I have been having some on again off again issues with the Eternal September Newsgroup server. I will send a message and get a notice that the message can not be sent. I have ended up sending messages message multiple times. Possibly causing distress to the specific group users. Eternal September Server Settings: Server Name > new.eternal-september.org > Port > 119 Eternal September Security Settings: Security Settings > Connection security > none I have added Newsgroup "news.aioe.org" and with this Newsgroup server test messages seem to be sent without error. The test messages sent through "news.aioe.org" do not seem to show in the Eternal September (news.eternal-september.org) mailbox promptly though. This seems to happen intermittently. Obviously due to my lack of experience this could be a settings issue of some nature on my end. I wanted to get your opinions on some possible solutions that I may be able to try to implement here. -Regards

Remember to don't leave Thunderbird sitting on the nntp server and close it, perhaps. Or use leafnode instead.

Free nntp servers have "quirks" and limitations. They may limit how many posts you send per minute, hour, or day, for instance. I have no personal experience with Eternal September, except that I did not succeed using it. I used nntp.aioe.org (news.aioe.org is their secondary server). You could try freenews.netfront.net, perhaps. Others I had in my list were: xsusenet.com news.mixmin.net www.supernews.com I can not vouch for any. But being free, several nutheads and spammers use it, and as a consequence veteran posters filter out (ie, delete immediately) any post coming from aioe - till they know you and make an exception for you (which is difficult to get, as they don't see you). So in the end I had to use a pay server. News.Individual.NET is only 10€ a year. Or, you may want to set up a proxy nntp server. leafnode is the best. I use it since decades. One advantage is that you can configure several outside servers: if one fails it will try another. However, if a post is rejected you will have to inspect the log or the output directory to find out why and retry (move the file to certain dir, and edit the date) -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Or use leafnode instead. 1. How can I properly close it? 2. You mean by not leaving Thunderbird on nntp server to maybe adjust the port by one up or down for instance Aioe to 120 from 119? I created some other Thunderbird profiles each containing just one newsgroup. I believe you said that you use News.Individual.Net which costs 10 euros + vat each year: http://news.individual.net/overview.php > >> >> 1. I installed the leafnode package through YaST. Looks like more of an advanced setup will be required perhaps something in /etc/host/*hosts*. I started some notes on this. Currently bash output is as follows: ~> leafnode absolute path to 'leafnode' is '/usr/sbin/leafnode', so running it may require superuser privaledges (eg, root). I do not think I should run this as root. I am going to have to look more deeply into this. -Kind Regards > >

I created > some other Thunderbird profiles each containing just one newsgroup. Wow. One profile per newsgroup? Why? There is no need for that. I just have a single profile with one nntp server and perhaps thirty newsgroups. And several mail accounts. I just move the position on the left panel to a mail account. You could, in "server settings" of the Usenet account disable the "check every 15 minutes" I understand that by Thunderbird profile you actually mean a profile and not an account. These is the command to see the profiles or start a different one: thunderbird--ProfileManager --no-remote > > I believe you said that you use News.Individual.Net which costs 10 euros > + vat each year: http://news.individual.net/overview.php Correct. ... >> So in the end I had to use a pay server. I use a single profile for everything. I don't use ssl. There is little point, as all the conversations on Usenet are public. Wait, maybe the old version of leafnode does not support ssl and that's why I don't use it. But this server does offer SSL, see their config page: http://news.individual.net/config.php >> Or, you may want to set up a proxy nntp server. leafnode is the best. >> I use it since decades. No, you don't call "leafnode" directly. 1) A daemon is started automatically when thunderbird tries to connect to "localhost" at 119. This should be done automatically by leafnode.socket: Telcontar:~ # systemctl status leafnode.socket ● leafnode.socket - Leafnode NNTP server Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/leafnode.socket; enabled; vendor preset: disabled) Active: active (listening) since Tue 2021-05-04 19:49:30 CEST; 6 days ago Listen: [::]:119 (Stream) Accepted: 674; Connected: 2 Tasks: 0 CGroup: /leafnode.socket May 04 19:49:30 Telcontar systemd[1]: Listening on Leafnode NNTP server. Telcontar:~ # 2) You add a news account on Thunderbird that simply points to localhost at 119, no security. 3) You configure "/etc/leafnode/config" adding one or more external news servers. The file has many comments explaining things. 4) Have a look at /usr/share/doc/packages/leafnode/examples/leafnode-fetch.cron Copy (and edit) that file to /etc/cron.d/leafnode-fetch.cron I see missing another cron job that I have and I don't see in the current rpm, that calls /usr/sbin/texpire once a day. I don't know why it is missing. If need be, I can share my cron file. *HOWEVER* This leafnode is *ancient* and barely maintained. There is a much newer version (a fork) on the "server:proxy" repository. Version 1 and 2 are so different that it is impossible to upgrade from one to the other, so I would recommend you go directly to version 2. Yes, it is not a stable version. I think I have it installed on another computer, for testing it. I want to migrate to it this computer but it is a chore. (version 2 supports ssl, for instance, IIRC) http://krusty.dt.e-technik.tu-dortmund.de/~ma/leafnode/beta/FAQ.html There may be a newer one somewhere. Perhaps: http://krusty.dt.e-technik.tu-dortmund.de/~ma/leafnode/leafnode-2.git/ -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.2 x86_64 at Telcontar)
