Re: Gnome: Out of context, and miss-quoted.
Seems like you are using an incorrect quote which is taken out of context about the state of Gnome vs KDE. I posted an explanation here:
http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=55745&cid=5445520
Sadly the truth is not as fancy as the incorrect quotation. The major issue was really `it is hard to build', which is hardly a problem. And the `lagging behind' quote is within the context of *slashdot* perception, not reality.
If you are going to quote, at least quote the entire message, and do not attribute to me an "edited" version of what I did say.
Referring to this email for the benefit of the SuSErs: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2003-March/msg00026.html First, I didn't mis-quote you, or edit what you said. With the exception of a fullstop (period) at the end of the first section, my quote is character for character what you typed. Second, all quotes, by their nature, are out of context. That is only normally a problem if what was intended by the original statement is altered by the quoting. In this case, I don't think it is. The second part of my quote is repeating a simple fact in the exact words you used to state it. The fact could be stated in any context. I can't see how context could change it. As for the first part, had you said: "Reading today's Slashdot comments, you can see that *it is perceived that* our desktop is falling behind stability-wise and feature wise to KDE" and I'd slyly taken out the "it is perceived that" bit, you'd have a point. But you didn't say that. You stated what some Slashdot readers can see to be reality, and what I can see to be reality: stability wise and feature wise, GNOME is falling behind KDE. From what you wrote, it seems you can see the reality of that too. If you're now telling me that that's not what you meant to say, hard luck. You said it, it's on the record, and my partial quoting of it doesn't change the meaning of what you said. I'm not going to quote your entire email in my sig for obvious reasons, although I have referred the 3 or 4 people who asked about it to the original mailing list post. And since I'm not attributing to you an edited version, nor anything which you didn't actually say, I'll continue to use the quote as I wish. -- "...our desktop is falling behind stability-wise and feature wise to KDE ...when I went to Mexico in December to the facility where we launched gnome, they had all switched to KDE3." - Miguel de Icaza, March 2003
