[opensuse] xinitd: package imap not installed: service can not be enabled.
Hi List, xinetd needs a package called imap, to enable the service, which can not be found. If this package exists: where would this be? if not: and this should/could be a script: what should be in there, and where should it reside? some help greatly appreciated, even from 'oldtimers' who consider me a 'youngster' :-) rob. -- Enjoy your time around, Oddball (M9.) Really? Which IMAP server? Cyrus [awesome!], Dovecot, and other I believe all run as independent services [not under the superserver]. Antique UW-IMAP is the only one I'm aware of that uses the superserver - if you install that does an xinetd service appear?

I don't have a /etc/xinetd.d/imap* file, dovecot does not install it. Are you trying to acivate imap in yast and that requires setting xinit's imap? That is a bug. Some suse devs say that wu-imap is crap, but yast mail configuration still sets it, it seems, with disastrous results (Bob). You can not currently use yast to configure imap mail - perhaps it is yast which is crap nowdays for trying to install crap :-P (kidding - reduction to the absurd)

Do not attempt to use Yast to configure dovecot or imap. It will not work. Don't try to set up xinet for dovecot, and even less using yast for the purpose. Setting up dovecot is almost trivial, but you have to do it manually. Forget Yast, except for the package download/install. Obviously, if you are not sure of how to do it, you have to ask and wait for replies - and don't replace your working mail setup till the new setup works. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. And I certainly do not have imap in xinit.
I removed imap package and dovecot still works and I still have access to remote/local mail via imap. I now have no /etc/init.d/imap*, either, and the service is no longer running. I believe I was following instructions from the internet (?) that included starting imap service via xinit.d and enabling that service required installing imap. Anyway, it apparently is *not* necessary and is now gone :^) And mail still works. Unless I begin serving mail for someone other than myself, I see *no* need for the hoops, dovecot/squirrelmail/imap. Remote access via ssh is sufficient. The only possibility I see atm is being somewhere with *slow* internet service, and that would cause difficulty in either case. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I removed imap package and dovecot still works and I still have access to remote/local mail via imap. I now have no /etc/init.d/imap*, either, and the service is no longer running.
Dovecot is started from "dovecot" script, not imap. At least, mine is.
I believe I was following instructions from the internet (?) that included starting imap service via xinit.d and enabling that service required installing imap.
You should have followed my littly guide ;-p

If mutt serves all your needs, then certainly, mutt via ssh is fine. But there are more uses than accessing email from another machine: I use it because I can read an email with Alpine, then also start Thunderbird and read another email with html, and have both Th and alpine at the same time reading the same folder. And the advantage of dovecot for us is that it can read mail folders on your home, and you still can use mutt/alpine to access those folders in the old way, directly. Dovecot can share. That is, I still can use mail exactly as I did before installing dovecot. The rest of the chain is the same one, unmodified: fetchmail, postfix, amavis, spamassassin, procmail. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. And I can start multiple ssh instances and do the same and/or open multiple xterm screens from a single ssh instance and do the same and/or I can open an ssh instance of screen/tmux and do the same :^)

But I can still do the same with less installed software and fewer open ports via ssh :^)
That is, I still can use mail exactly as I did before installing dovecot. The rest of the chain is the same one, unmodified: fetchmail, postfix, amavis, spamassassin, procmail.
This is the primary reason that I began using ssh and I can also open a vncviewer instance and run X directly from my home machine. How is it said, "Many ways to skin a cat" :^) I still find that ssh [-Y} is the simplest. And you could do the same with ssh/pine/alpine/????. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

oh yes, all in multiple sessions with mutt. Mutt opens in read mode and does not lock the files if the external editor is configured. I have never used the internal editor and do not know anyone who does. I have always used jed (preferred as it understands and reformats quoting when edited) or joe, both in ws modes. Many prefer vi/emacs but I come from cp/m. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, it doesn't work. Alpine sees the previous alpine session, takes the lock, and the first session becomes read-only. The inbox file is what it checks. It should be possible to work r/w on different folders, but the detection is done on the inbox only. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. Ah, a mutt plus :^) Mutt opens in the read mode and initiates editing (if external editor is configured) externally. I can opens and read/reply to the same msg as many instances as I wish and/or tag several msgs to combine into a single reply with each quoted. but we have wandered far from the posted Subject and should start another thread or stop :^) -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
