SuSE 8 hangs on install (onboard pdc20265 ata100 controller) HELP!
Hi, I've been looking around all internet trying to solve this problem but i haven't found a solution still. I'm trying to install suse 8.0 on a A7V mainboard with PDC20265 ATA100 onboard controller with a 20Gb ATA100 Maxtor drive. When the kernel starts I see: [snip...] PDC20265: not 100% native mode: will probe later PDC20265: (U)DMA Burst bit DISABLED Primary PCI Mode Secondary PCI Mode PDC20265: Forcing Burst Bit 0x00 -> 0x01 ACTIVE ide2: BM-DMA at 0x8000-0x8007, BIOS settings: hde:DMA, hdf:pio ide3: BM-DMA at 0x8008-0x800f, BIOS settings: hdg:DMA, hdh:DMA [snip...] hde: MAXTOR 6L020J1, ATA DISK drive [snip...] hde: 40132503 sectors (20540 MB) w/1818KiB Cache, CHS=39813/16/63 [snip...] Partition check: hda: hda1 hda2 hda3 [snip...] hde: [PTBL] [2498/255/63] hde1 --- HERE HANGS --- The kernel hangs hare. I tryed to change many bios values (such as load or not scsi bios) with no results.. The Maxtor drive works well under W2K.. The Maxtor drive works well under W2K..
Hello, I see that the Maxtor attached to external PCI controller... I kind of reckon, if all other suggestions fail, you should attach the drive to the onboard controller instead. Install as usual and see if it passes. Then we can try reparking it on the external controller. Might have to repoint lilo. Let's see how you progress for now. -- Kemdi IN_SuSE_d Since 5.2 123792 of counter.li.org ICQ:112290572

is not an external pci controller but a second onboard controller.

Kernel hangs when it tryes to detect drive partitions. I'll try to format it before. -- -- Mario Libraro Fulltrading S.p.A. ------------------------------------ Sede di Roma: | Via Dora, 7 | 00198 Roma (RM) | :P Tel +39 06 8845203| Fax +39 06 8845227| ------------------------------------ Sede di Bari: Centro Direzionale Il Baricentro 70010 Casamassima (BA) Tel +39 080 6970153 Fax +39 080 4572485 Tech Support: 199 714 879

Okay !! I dont know if you've taken a look at : http://www.geocities.com/ender7007/ or http://www.linuxvoodoo.com/newbies/ata66-100/ They almost parrot each other. But I'll be wrong to quote either here. Later. -- Kemdi IN_SuSE_d Since 5.2 123792 of counter.li.org ICQ:112290572

they both deals with old kernels who doesn't correctly recognize the controller (RedHat 6.2). But SuSE 8.0 uses the 2.4.18 kernel.. I tried to put another, formatted, well working drive on interface. Now it says: Partition check: hde: [PTBL] [784/255/63] hde1 hde2 hde3 < hde5 hde6 hde7 hde8 > and here hangs too. :( -- -- Mario Libraro Fulltrading S.p.A. ------------------------------------ Sede di Roma: | Via Dora, 7 | 00198 Roma (RM) | :P Tel +39 06 8845203| Fax +39 06 8845227| ------------------------------------ Sede di Bari: Centro Direzionale Il Baricentro 70010 Casamassima (BA) Tel +39 080 6970153 Fax +39 080 4572485 Tech Support: 199 714 879

Wow... Sorry Mario. It seems you're not alone. Here's some notes and quotes from the High-Priests themselves : ========================>QUOTE<===================== " There is something wrong in drivers/ide/pdc202xx.c ide driver. Andre Hedrick has merged ide stuff to 2.4.18 kernel that released for RedHat 7.3, SuSE 8.0 and Mandrake 8.2. That has a bug inside that is harmful to our company. First, in pdc202xx_dmaproc() function. Our source code is: unsigned long atapi_port =high_16+ 0x20 + (hwif->channel ? 0x04 : 0x00); 2.4.19pre8(RedHat 7.3, SuSE 8.0 and Mandrake 8.2) is: unsigned long atapi_reg = high_16 + (hwif->channel ? 0x24 : 0x00); The Primary channel get's a wrong address, So this causes our PDC20265/67 to not work on the Primary channel with LBA48 drives. Andre, I think this is your mistake, Could you please be kind enough to fix it? Second, our PDC20262 controller does not support LBA48 with the hardware48hack function. Please fix it in the pdc202xx_dmaproc() function also. Third, I told Alan before. In pdc202xx_new_tune_chipset() function. We need to set timing only if ATA133 drives exist on both channels. If not, we do not need to set timing here. Please update this function also. Fourth. I hope we can add some more quirk drives to the pdc202xx.c list below "QUANTUM FIREBALLP KA9.1" "QUANTUM FIREBALLP KX13.6" please append these. The last. I hope you guys could help us to notify RedHat, SuSE, Mandrake and etc to fix this bug as soon as possible. Thanks in advance and sincerely Hank Yang (Promise)" ==========================<END of QUOTE>=================== Probably time to grab a specialised Slackware kernel that supports this. i.e the ata100.i . Try it. Later. -- Kemdi IN_SuSE_d Since 5.2 123792 of counter.li.org ICQ:112290572
oh god! i put the old first hard disk (a 6 gigs quantum) on hde.. it hanged too Partition check: hde: hde1 hde2 hde3 ..... [HANG] i put it again on firs eide port (hda) and *DISCONNECTED* the new HD from hde. But not hda hangs too!!! Partition check: hda: hda1 hda2 hda3 ..... [HANG] ???? I simply put the hard disk on first ata100 and back on first eide. Now it hangs... but it *worked* in this configuration before!! It's like it was "infected" when i connected it on hde... *Windows continue to starts well...* (i had a dual bot on quantum) What's happened? What's changed on quantum when i moved it on hde and back on hda?? -- -- Mario Libraro Fulltrading S.p.A. ------------------------------------ Sede di Roma: | Via Dora, 7 | 00198 Roma (RM) | :P Tel +39 06 8845203| Fax +39 06 8845227| ------------------------------------ Sede di Bari: Centro Direzionale Il Baricentro 70010 Casamassima (BA) Tel +39 080 6970153 Fax +39 080 4572485 Tech Support: 199 714 879
