[opensuse] is there something subtly wrong with Knode and Kmail?
I have seen this sort of thing happen here and there and I am wondering if other people have the same sort of experience. I would like to fully migrate over to Kmail and Knode instead of thunderbird, because the interface looks cleaner and smoother to my eyes. Also, Kmail has the exceedingly nice aggregation of "current activity, threaded" which makes sorting through massive amounts of email so much easier. Especially nice in this is the separation of emails between todays emails, yesterday's, and the previous day's, etc. If Thunderbird had this option I would totally be willing to stick with Thunderbird. However, one of kmails problems is that it seems really slow to connect and download. I saw this when initially set up my mails, in that it took upwards of 8 hours on my laptop to download all my imap emails, probably about 5000 stored (which I like to cache, so that contributes to the slowness). On my desktop it didn't take that long, maybe 3 hours. On Thunderbird, it took less than an hour for everything to be downloaded. So I found a random blogger on the internet that was comparing email clients, and this was his complaint about kmail also My experience now is that there is not much of a problem with kmail, except for an occasional slowness of this same type. It seemed that once all the imap emails were in and cached, regular email checking seems to go right along somewhat smoothly. However, knode seems to be different. I posted a test message in the forums this morning, and it took 15 minutes before my test message was able to be downloaded back into knode for me to see it. Right after I posted it, I used thunderbird's nntp client to post a different message in a different forum (still the opensuse forums, just a different one), and this one came back to thunderbird within 10 seconds. It also grabbed right away my original post from knode. As I watch the lower right screen of Kontact that indicates the activity it is working on, it is continuously waiting, waiting, waiting... as it tries to connect with the forums. Then after about 10 minutes it is successful and connects with them all. My question is if anyone else has this same type of experience of somewhat random slowness in kmail and knode. I can't put my finger on any particular settings as being the cause because they are exactly the same as in thunderbird on all accounts, yet the slowness is not there in tb. It has its own other problems, but not this one. -- George Olson Box #1: 12.2 | KDE 4.9.2 | AMD Phenom IIX4 | 64 | ATI Radeon HD 3300 | 16GB Box #2: 12.2 | KDE 4.9.1 | AMD Athlon X3 | 64 | nVidia C61 GeForce 7025 | 4GB Laptop: 12.2 | KDE 4.9.2 | Core i7-2620M | 64 | Intel HD Graphics 3000 | 8GB learning openSUSE and loving it -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi I would look at running wireshark to see what's occurring, maybe a lot of retransmissions? If you run ifconfig are there many errors on the interface? I use claws-mail for nntp access to Novell, NetIQ, SUSE, openSUSE, gmane and eternal-september as well as multiple email accounts (not imap though) the only thing I had to do recently was tweak the socket i/o timeout due to the forum typhoon server being a bit flakey at times, so might pay to see if that can be set for forum access. -- Cheers Malcolm °¿° (Linux Counter #276890) openSUSE 12.2 (x86_64) Kernel 3.4.11-2.16-desktop up 5 days 2:00, 5 users, load average: 0.25, 0.18, 0.15 CPU Intel i5 CPU M520@2.40GHz | Intel Arrandale GPU -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I ran wireshark, but I don't really know how to read the data. On ifconfig, there are zero errors. -- George Olson Box #1: 12.2 | KDE 4.9.2 | AMD Phenom IIX4 | 64 | ATI Radeon HD 3300 | 16GB Box #2: 12.2 | KDE 4.9.1 | AMD Athlon X3 | 64 | nVidia C61 GeForce 7025 | 4GB Laptop: 12.2 | KDE 4.9.2 | Core i7-2620M | 64 | Intel HD Graphics 3000 | 8GB learning openSUSE and loving it -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi So do you see many red highlighted entries maybe Retransmission errors (well any errors). When you connect to say the forum, add a filter just add the word nntp there is a test thread, send and watch what happens. -- Cheers Malcolm °¿° (Linux Counter #276890) openSUSE 12.2 (x86_64) Kernel 3.4.11-2.16-desktop up 5 days 16:25, 5 users, load average: 0.01, 0.05, 0.10 CPU Intel i5 CPU M520@2.40GHz | Intel Arrandale GPU -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Ha! - my experience different . . . happily used Kmail for many years, but after openSuSE 11.4 found i was not able to import my kmail e-mails into the new improved version of kmail ALSO for my experience "Akonadi" database painfully slowed my whole machine, hogging resources . . . Thus, in despair, moved from Kmail to Thunderbird :) .............. best regards -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
