[opensuse] 12.3 -- why USB HDD not being seen by Midnight Commander?
I have an external SATA3 2TB Western Digital HDD which is formatted (at the moment) in ntfs. When I switch it on Dolphin opens this HDD and I can see all the files it contains. But unlike what I got in 12.2 when I start mc (Midnight Commander, my much preferred file manager) mc doesn't 'see' this HDD. In 12.2 it used to be mounted in /media/<name of HDD> . In /etc/filesystem I have 'ntfs' as an addition to the list of file systems. So, why isn't the HDD mounted in /media as in the past? Any clues, please? Since I nearly always mount my externals manually, and in runlevel 3, I'm unfamiliar how in X auto-mounting does or should work with eSATA devices. MC only fails for me if I forget to mount first. :-) Nevertheless I'm going to take a stab in hopes of getting you going somewhere and say it's likely to do with udisks and/or udisks2. On 12.3 you may have one installed and need the other either also or instead. Thanks, Felix, I'll install udisks later to see what happens but for the moment I found where the darn HDD is hiding - a place I would never had even guessed if my life depended on it :-( . What a *STUPID* place for 12.3 to mount it! :-( . See my response to Michael Norman. Basil, How are you making it mount in the first place without dolphin? When I connect an external drive with 12.3 I am asked by a notifier if I want to open the drive in dolphin. If I say no, it doesn't mount at all. :( Verified by that very simple command "mount". If I then open dolphin and click on the drive on the left side, it gets mounted where you say, but also in /run/media/<my-user-name>. I do most of my production work on external drives from the command line so having to jump to dolphin is a pain. I'll mull this over thanks, Patrick. But the question remains: why the heck change the mount point from /media where it has been for years? The mind boggles. In System Settings>Removable Devices I have Mount Device When Attached selected, and when I switch it on - or plugin a USB memory stick - Dolphin asks me if I want to open the device using Dolphin. And, as you say, if I ignore Dolphin's question the device is NOT mounted and I then have to mount it manually. But what is now occurring is that when Dolphin goes to read the device the device is mounted in /var...... and not simply in /media/<ID-of-the-device> where these devices have been mounted for many years. My preferred file manager since I started fooling around with Linux has been mc which I use for 99.9% of the time. So when I plug-in a USB stick or switch on the external HDD I allow Dolphin to access it then I close down Dolphin and use mc. Seeing as how USB devices are mounted in /var/..... I juat may create a symlink in /media because after all these years going to /media to access the device is second nature - AND it requires less keystrokes to get to the mounted device! This has been commented for a long time, I have been reading of this change since months. It is an upstream decision, somewhere. They think it is better to have the username in the mount point.
