Generic vs Desktop icon of differing extensions?

Then I do a "locate foo.png" and if that doesn't turn up anything. If not them a just do a wider search for "locate foo" and look for icon extensions. I have found a few icons to say the least. But I have run in to a situation wherein no *,xpm/.png exists but a *.desktop does. Looking at this it looks like an icon to me! But try to change the extension from *.desktop to *.xpm (or ,png) and it almost always turns into a generic/broken file page symbol/icon. So,... What is the difference that make a *.desktop unique/special compared to a more common *.xpm/.png extensions? A .desktop file is just a text file, not an image. Konqueror displays an icon for it, is that what you mean by "it looks like an icon to me"? Open the .desktop file in a text editor, you should see a line "Icon=something", that something is the name of the icon displayed

Gotcha! Now I wonder, since certain apps had *.desktop file but I couldn't find a *.xpm/.png for them that it would default to the generic Page icon? Hmmm... maybe I need to install a couple more icon sets (lol). Thanks for clearing that up Ander (as usual).
