First off, I'd really like to thank everyone who has emailed me concerning the modem. I really appreciate it. Just about all of the suggestions have been for external modems....is there a reason for the preference, or could I look for an internal version of these brands? Lynda, Internal modems work fine, just don't get burned with a WinModem. I use a U.S. Robotics internal and it works just fine. Jim Lynda wrote:

I prefer externals. If you have a free serial port, it seems that they
are easier to set up. Some times with an internal, getting the IRQ's and I/O
ports configured without conflicting with the on-board stuff is a bit of a
hassle. You don't have to crack the case either. They are easily portable
from computer to computer. Works fine with bellsouth.net (my other ISP).
But it's really 'cause I can see the lights flash.
BTW mine is a 56K Zoom external. I've used it with 95/98/NT Workstation and
3 different linux distributions (Slack/Caldera/Suse) and the home-grown
2.3.99+ development partition.

One of the biggest reasons, that was not mentioned a lot, is that external modems are less likely to be "soft"modems. That is, a WinModem. If you look at the Linux-modem list that I sent to you, you will find quite a few modems on there that do not work with Linux. Almost 100% of them are Internal modems. The external modems are more likely to be hardware based, and therefore Linux compatible. On the other hand, if you do decide to go with an Internal modem (for most people it is because of cost - internal is usually 3/4 to 1/2 the price of an external) please check out that Linux modem list. That way you are not likely to get burned. Stuart p.s. There is a link somewhere to a "Cheap Linux Box" - in there they give at least two internal modems that work with Linux. -- Stuart Hall Cheshire, Connecticut, USA Linux User# 141732 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
