Ahbaid,
I use a utility called Gkrellm to check my mailboxes for mail. It
has a nice little spinning icon that tells you that you have mail.
You can also have it check the mailboxes themselves and it will tell
you which mailboxes you have mail in if you are using procmail to
filter your mail. Give it a looking at. It might suite your needs.
