[opensuse] 4 port NIC recommendation for SuSE-10.0
Can anyone recommend a quad port nic card that will work on SuSE-10.0. Thanks Mark -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Can anyone recommend a quad port nic card that will work on SuSE-10.0.
"SUN QFE". Rare stuff. Worked inside a SPARC. The module is generic, so it should work anywhere where you can put the card in. PCI-X, hence, should also work everywhere. (I just don't get it why manufacturers don't slap more than two ports on NICs...) -`J' -- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks, ya I don't know why not either. Ok that would be the SUN HAPPYMEAL kernel config option for the driver. $100.00. Thanks Mark -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hah go to Sun Spare Parts Store and get one for $1299 something (yes, no dots!) *bigeyes* -`J' -- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

-`J' -- Well, you could search ebay for it. I got mine quad ethernet-board (with four dec21140 chips) on it.
Only draw back is that there is a division among pci-boards 32 versus 64 bit, 3.3 volt versus 5.0 volt, etc etc etc My board is a plain 5.0Volt, 32-bit that worked flawlessly in ether Ultra-5 or any desktop-PC, or older server. My latest server only has 3.3 volt slots, alas.. Or try asking in #aurora, I think there was someone having a stack of those qfe.

32 bit PCI should be bidirectionally compatible with 64 bit PCI. Just that you don't get the same amount of PCI bandwidth. And given that a cheap realtek card also works in the SUN E250 (3.3, 5.0? No idea!) makes it look promising that the QFE will work anywhere too. One thing that might become problematic is the bus speeds, I don't know about these. -`J' -- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

PCI bandwidth problems, latencies, bottlenecks, ... PCI technology hasn't advanced that much :( Rafa -- 50% of all statistics are inaccurate. OpenWengo: rgriman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

For its time, you could regard something like QFE as perfect. And even now, it serves as a good routing card. It is very useful where the number of PCI slots is limited. -`J' --

It depends on what you want it to do. Do you want suse to see eth0 eth2 eht3 eth4, or are you just looking for a hub/switch? If you just want a hub/switch, go get a hub/switch and forget these cards. If you want 4 ethernet cards in one slot, I have seen such things, (and actually have a couple) but I have not actually tried to use them in Suse. I'll dig them up and see what they do. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Yep thats what I need. eth1-4. I upgraded a box from 9.0 to 10.0 that had an adaptec quad port card. (never new adaptec made nics) It's just broken in the kernel I have to use so I gotta replace it. To the best of my knowledge the Intel ones all work with the standard intel network drivers. You can also look at the card that Soekris (www.soekris.com) offers for their embedded boards. It's a four port, and all their hardware is designed with Linux/BSD in mind. I ended up getting an Intel 82546GB Gigabit Ethernet Controller. Works great. Only problem is if I use it on 10.0, I have to download and install the drivers from Intel. Even when I'm using the latest kernels (2.6.18). No biggy. 10.1 and 10.2 it works flawlessly. I think it ended up costing $400.00.
