Since moving to SuSE 9.2 from SuSE 8.2, I have experienced odd xterm behaviour when running certain applications in terms of how various characters are displayed (or not, as the case may be), for example the UKP character (£). If I post an article to a Usenet newsgroup using slrn running in an xterm window, for instance, including the £ character, that character is visible when I read the article using slrn. However, the £ character is not visible in other poster's articles when read using slrn. I have also experienced odd charset related effects when connecting to externally hosted shell accounts using ssh running in an xterm, with various characters being unreadable, or not viewable at all. After Googling for answers for a while, I have resolved that issue completely by invoking ssh on each occasion as follows: anthony@ultra:~> LC_ALL=en_GB luit ssh -l username remote_host Which works perfectly. I have discovered this evening, by trial and error, that invoking local xterms for use with slrn as follows results in perfect slrn character display also: anthony@ultra:~> LC_ALL=en_GB luit xterm -bg black -fg white -geometry 80x36 & This should not be necessary though, should it? I must emphasise that it is only since the move to SuSE 9.2 that this issue has arisen, and exists on all machines on which I have installed SuSE 9.2 to date. -- Anthony Edwards anthony.edwards@uk.easynet.net
