This is out of the box (or jewelcase). I have never undertaken a kernel recompile before......Actually, it seems kinda scary :-)

Oh another quick question. I have seen a lot of 2.1.x kernels.

Firstly, are they stable?! Secondly.....are all linux kernels independent of distributions?

According to www.kernel.org the latest version is 2.1.132.

Can I download that and install it on my SuSE 5.3 box? or does it have to go through some modifications by SuSE first and then be available at their ftp site?!

Go back to www.kernel.org and read carefully. Kernel versions with an odd second number are *developmental* kernels. They have drivers and features that the normal ones don't have, but unless you are developing for it or need one of those drivers, it is suggested that you use a stable kernel. Recompiling the kernel sounds more scary than it is. I've done it so many times that I can do it in my sleep and I've only had it fail on two occasions 1) my L2 cache on the motherboard was bad and 2) I was adjusting the Sound Blaster parameters to get the right IRQ and DMA values.
