Nailed it. I went into Yast. Found the installed driver. Clicked on Options. There are three settings. The last one is a "fix for buggy hardware". It defaults to "0"; and I tried setting it to "1". Suddenly, I have sound(!) ( I guess a Gateway is considered *buggy* hardware...guess it must be since it was "designed for XP" ;) )
