[SuSE Linux] Glibc2 and Version 5.3
Please help if you can!!! I have completely messed up an otherwise perfect Linux system trying to install Glibc2. My "symptoms" are than Netscape now crashes with a "segmentation fault" and StarOffice (which started this whole mess) refuses to install because of an undefined symbol (referencing my shared libraries). Here is how it happened: I got very excited about SO5 and downloaded it rather than waiting for SuSe 6.0 (which I HOPE is coming any day now!!). SO5 refused to install. Looking at the documentation about the glibc that came with SO5, I ascertained that SO5 needed its own glibc. So I ran the glibc2 install routine that comes with SO5, using the "force" option to overwrite my preexisintg ld.so loader. Well, that didn't work and SO5 still refused to install. And worse, Wordperfect 8.0 Linux and Netscape now refused to start (they worked perfectly before)! Rather than giving up on SO5 at this point like any sane person, I decided that getting and installing the newest glibc2 might help. Following the instructions on the glibc2-HOWTO, I downloaded and installed the hefty glibc2 tar plus crypt etc. I then successfully made ("make"ed) the libraries and ran the installation scripts. I also ln -s the new ld.so links. Now, Wordperfect works thankfully. But Netscape crashes on startup with "segmentation faults" and SO5 still refuses to install. Any ideas how I messed up, and more importantly how to fix this mess? Will installing SuSe 6.0 overwrite my screw-ups? Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. - Jeff Norman

begin:vcard n:;Jeffery S. I hate to laugh, but ha,ha,ha. (Hey, it's Friday night) :-) I've done this myself, and had to reinstall all the C related files. Just go into Yast and reinstall all the Development packages, and C header files that you can find. Only a few of the elite linux masters have sucessfully put glibc2 into a suse5.3 system. Some claim success, but find out later that some glitch has occurred. Or.... just kickback until 6.0 comes out, next week I hear.:-) - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
