thunderbird errors after update
I updated my system with YOU yesterday and one of the things that was update was Thunderbird. Now when I try to use Edit/Find/Search Messages, it says: XML Parsing Error: syntax error Location: chrome://messenger/content/SearchDialog.xul Line Number 1, Column 1: urce = RDF.GetResource(uri); ^ Aargh! Has anybody seen this? Does anybody know how to fix it? I'd like to tell you what version it is but when I click on Help/About, it says: XML Parsing Error: not well-formed Location: chrome://messenger/content/aboutDialog.xul Line Number 2, Column 8: </row> -------^ I hate to think what else is broken. YaST says I have version 1.5.0.7-0.1-i586 installed and that 1.0-5-i586 is available. Is there any way to go back to the version I had yesterday? Oh, I'm on SUSE 9.3. Thanks and regards, Dave

I'm running MozillaThunderbird-1.5.0.7-0.1 on 9.3, just did Edit/Find/Search Messages twice-- first on a string not found, then on a string which was found-- and didn't get any error either time. Perhaps you're not running the Homeland Security Enhanced Version. :) -- In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes an act of rebellion. --George Orwell

Well, I guess that's a useful data point.

Sorry, I don't understand that. Does anybody know anything about how I might fix this? Is there a way to undo YOU updates? I haven't found any xul files or found the text within a file. Does anybody know where this data is stored? Thanks, Dave

For the archive: I asked on Mozilla's Thunderbird support forum and was referred to: <http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Thunderbird> The problem seems to have gone away after I removed an extension (External Editor), so for now I'm treating it as fixed. <aside>I find it difficult to believe that a minor version upgrade 1.5.0.6 to 1.5.0.7 could introduce a change in the system that could cause an extension to malfunction, and I also find it difficult to believe that an extension could affect the core application functionality - Search and Help - in this way , unless the program is unbelievably badly structured. So I suspect there's something else going on that may eventually surface.</aside> Cheers, Dave

I wouldn't call a security upgrade as a "minor version upgrade". Re the extension(s). They are apparently written to recognise a particular version of either TB or FF and may not work if the version changes. There is an extension called Nightly Tester Tools which, when activated, makes extensions/themes compatible with the newer versions of TB/FF. When installing a theme/extension the info about it will show with which version of TB/FF they are designed to work. Cheers. -- "Every burned book enlightens the world." Ralph Waldo Emerson

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minor_version> specifically says it is :) Any upgrade that only changes the last component of the version number is a minor upgrade. And minor upgrades must not change the API - otherwise they need to be reclassified as major. So an extension should not even notice there's been a minor upgrade unless it specifically asks or it was the victim of the bug that necessitated the upgrade. Cheers, Dave
