[SLE] Online Update via Yast2 problems...
Hi there -- Running 10.1... So I can start an online update through Yast2... it shows packages available... I select them... And then when I click "Accept" the window just disappears. I can repeat this over and over. No error appears on the console. Same thing if I just run "YOU" from the command line. Any ideas? Also, can anyone explain to me the difference between the Online Update via Yast2/YOU and the iconified update manager (I think it's the ZMD-updater) in 10.1? I'm a bit confused about the update process in this new version. Thanks! This means that nothing was to apply and all is fine.

There is not much difference, no. (Ideally none, but some small differences are there... For instance the applet always upgrades the packages, even in Optional patches.) Huh? Which update? If it clearly does not update a package to a newer version then it is a bug. One way to try and see if it is Yast crashing. run yast2 from the command line as root, then do what you want to do in Yast. When yast exits, it will return to the command line, it may then show an error as it exits regards Ian -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

There is one very important point missing here which is essential for all "newcomers" to this fiasco: when using YOU, all already installed patchesupdates are marked with a tick; in earlier versions a tick meant that a patch/update for the item was available and YOU would install it if the user so wanted by clicking on ACCEPT; in the "new order", if there is a triangular mark in the lefthand column and next to the tick then it means that a new patch/update is available for installation. If there is no triangular mark then nothing will happen and you just exit YOU and get on with your life.

Hello all: This is an answer too to the other replies in this thread. Let me write my experience of this SUSE YOU update in 10.1. 1. First of all if I click 'Online Update' in YaST Control Center, for about three (!) minutes it seems that nothing's going on. However top reports a y2base process running and using more than 99 % of CPU and 50 % of memory, thus slowing down the whole system. During this there is no one note, no one progress bar, nothing. Really awkward. 2. Finally I get the online update window with available patches. In my case 2 of them has the ticks and also the little triangles: lybzipp update and yast2-online-update. Now I click 'Accept' and then the window closes and no update patch is installed. 3. I reopen the Online Update window again. See point 1. 4. The same as point 2, again I have the triangels and ticks at the abovementioned patches. 5. With the right mouse click I can change the ticks to on and off (install/do not install) states of the patches. But turning to install state the triangles do not reappear. I could not find a way make them reappear. 6. Now the ticks are on but there are no triangles. Click on accept. The window closes without installing the patches. So you guys can try to explain about triangles and ticks, this thing just does not do what it should. At least I guess. I think the old you update system was really reliable. And this one in 10.1 is not working and if it does, it is very awkward. I know this was discussed in the forum(s) already and patches were released. But many (including me) just do not have time to read all of the list mails and figure out what to do and how. I searched the suse and novell site for a description and solution of this zmd/libzypp/online update problem but found nothing. Please send me a link if there is one. Life is too short and I have wasted too much of whatever I have left on this zmd disaster. So, zmd has been flushed down the sewer, and with Fred Miller's help I have just switched over to smart (at least I think I have - will know when it actually updates something :-) ).
