[SLE] Re: buying a printer

Does anybody know whether SuSE 6.3 supports the Multipass 5500 Printer from Canon.
The question really is: "does Ghostscript support your printer."
Ghostscript is the "driver" that converts postscript into the
stuff your printer needs, that knows the low-level details of
your printer. Of course, we're assuming your material has been
rendered into postscript somehow.
You can query your installation by invoking
gs --help
That'll show you, among other things, the printers your gs
was compiled with. If you don't see your exact printer, you
can try something close. And if you're really adventurous,
you can go to the Alladin website and download the latest version,
and all the docs, including docs that discuss the strengths and
weaknesses of various drivers. You might also get a question
answered on the usenet newsgroups:
comp.lang.postcript
gnu.ghostscript.bug
comp.periphs.printers
I had to put many hours into bringing up my HP612C printer on SuSE
5.3. Graphics weren't too bad, once I studied all the apsfilter
scripts, and understood gs well enough to massage the /etc/printcap
into shape, and set up all the applicable spool directories and
experimented with gamma correction to get a reasonable balance.
But I had to write my own version of atops.c to get reasonable ascii
printing, so that I could print a simple text file like:
