If you type "free" at a console, it'll tell you how much swap space you are
using & how much "real" memory is left. I have 96Mb, and even with Star
Office & Netscape running it barely touches swap. You'd be best served by
putting the swap partition on its own disk, or at least the fastest disk,
rather than making more swap ptns.
All you have to do to make a swap ptn is to run fdisk or the partitioning
utility in Yast, create a new ptn, change type to Linux Swap (83) and
initialise it with mkswap.

Subject: [SLE] Partitions - SWAP - Newbie(ish) question
Hi folks,
I let Yast do the partitioning on my work machine and I guess I now have
1 swap partition.
I remember reading a "partitioning" How-To and there was a sample list
which showed that the author had more than one swap partition.
My questions are .. ..
1) Does it actually help to have more than one swap partition ?
2) If yes then how many for a machine with 96MB Ram ?
3) Should I put them on diferent Hard Disks ?
4) Is it possible to add another swap partition to an existing
installation without starting again at the begining. I know I can use
FIPS to make some space but how do I then format the new partition as
swap and let Linux know that it is there and ready for use.
Finally.. .. Being a newbie I expected to see my current swap partition
in my /etc/fstab file but it isn't there - which file keeps that info?
Hope you guys will help.

Thanks Paul, running Star Office and the PDF viewer and netscape will make my machine stop. I tried typing free and there were three 0's (zeros!!) on the swap line. Is it possible I have managed to install on this machine without a swap??? Paul Sims wrote:

It is Acrobat Reader. (If that's the PDF viewer you are using) The latest version of Acrobat Reader has a huge memory leak. Once into this bottomless pit, AR will claim memory as long as it can, consuming all of it. At this stage it looks like machine has completely frozen. After all memory has been depleted, AR will crash and the machine comes back to life again. This whole period of "frost" can take up to 1 hour My advise, use an older version of AR.
