Where does YAST "hide" info on which software packages is installed

Open up Kpackage and you'll see what's installed. It's got a search and everything. You can also do rpm -q <package name> , or pin <package name> John --

Also, from inside Yast --> Install/Remove Software, select File --> Export. This will export a *.sel (selection) file to your location of choice. I always export one before major software changes, to make it easy to revert if something goes wrong. In addition, if you have something working on one box, but not on another box, you can export a *.sel file from both boxes, then use diff (or Kompare, if you prefer a gui) to see what packages are different between the two boxes.
